Teaching a horse to do a flying change???

canter a circle then go down to one stride of trot, then shift your weightto your other seatbone and ask for canter again on the other rein, keep tryign thi until when you swap your weight he automatically chnages legs. although it may not work but good luck!!

I was taught - canter, change the rein across a diagonal, come back to trot on the diagonal and ask for canter again as you get back onto the track [on the other rein], every time you practice you reduce the number of trot strides until you can do a flying change ...

Never did manage to get my old pony to do it tho' LOL

of course -- the thing to remember is we dont have to teach the horse to do flying lead changes...they do them just fine in the field LOL

the trick is getting our balance and timing right so they CAN do them wiht us on their backs...

so setting up a pattern for you AND your horse doing canter/walk transitions fro one lead to the other, on a cirlce is easier -- and as you both get more balanced your horse will offer a flying change ...
