when breaking up a stallion fight? Gloves obviously and clean underwear is a must. Sadly I only had the clean underwear!

A lot of swearing and the use of a headcollar and rope does the job though.

Had the scrap not been between those two I'd have thought twice about it. But since they are both of good temperament it was worth piling on to break it up.

Bloody amazing pictures !!!

What good boys they are to turn of stallion behaviour to listen and obey a human. Quite remarkable and speaks volumes.

I'm not sure how long my underwear would stay clean!

Amazing photos & very good boys to break it off when you waded in, thank goodness you could stop it before it escalated to an all out fight & someone was badly hurt.

I hope Indy's eye isn't too bad today, can you give him a get well kiss from me please?

PS I suspect the BHS view is that stallions should live in solitary confinement, or at least only with mares, therefore avoiding fights. Your's have a much better life!

You did well to get the first winter with the two out together, now Taktur says the gloves are off, and there's only room for one Stallion in this herd. Glad Indy's ok, but that eye look's sore, ouch :frown:
Taktur is certainly maturing
At least he has his pal with him

Where I used to live they had 6 stallions in one field and 3 in another all living in harmony! But the 3 kept separate would NOT get on with the other 6 !

I never saw a cross word between them, but the 3 cast into the other field were bottom of the pecking order originally and were very poor, but thrived in their own little herd.

Was very interesting to watch them, the largest one of the bunch was top man ! And he knew it, but the others knew their place.

It's not uncommon for the stallions to all live together in the Shetland and Icelandic world. There will always be personalities that will not get on, and unlike a mare or gelding dispute, will turn to REAL violence, so you have to find them someone they do get on with.

I think it's good they live in herds, horses are social animals after all. Also if the temperament is such that a stallion really cannot safely socialise (& I'm not talking about the poor individuals that have been kept isolated since weaning & so have never had a chance to learn social skills) should it really be used as breeding stock?

As always thank you so much for sharing such fabulous photo's. Glad Indy isn't too hurt and has his little mate to keep him company and boy can he throw a BIG buck for a little fella! They are all gorgeous too.

Love Indy's buck but poor little chap with his black eye. I am glad you managed to break them up.

Whatever the BHS says, I am sure that stallions are best living with as many other horses as possible!

Hecky!!! I had to laugh at the clean underwear comment - any mention of such always reminds me of The Young Ones - (back in the 80's it was my fav show!!!) and I remember Rick saying "oh well you know what they say - dirty underpants clean botty"! I know - it's sad but it was the way he used to say it.... heheheee
