I know many yards that will shut the top of stable doors when a horse is truly stressed in it. Is there any benefit to the horse when this is done???

We used to have a nervous gelding at our yard and when the tractor used to drive up the yard to deliver hay he used to go crazy. His top door was shut whilst the tractor was there and he seemed a lot calmer.
But how did he ever learn to be safe around tractors and heavy machinery if he was shut up every time any came near him? The person responsible was reinforcing his fear by doing this.
