Hi,
I'm a brand new member so hope I'm doing this right! I recently bought a beautiful Welsh D youngster and plan to show him in hand in M & M, ride and drive and perhaps specialist Welsh classes. However, I've NEVER shown before, only ever jumped! I've read and read but can't seem to find clear advice on what he should wear. He's rising 3 and is bitted. I'd rather show him in a bitted bridle as he can be strong and is much easier to control this way but what sort of bridle should he wear? I wouldn't be taking him to county sized shows yet but don't want to make a fool of myself in smaller ones either! Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Cathie.

Hi Cathie

Welcome to NR I would say a nice inhand bridle with nylon show bit with brass rings and leather and brass lead rein polished till it shines :D My friend recently showed her 3 year old Fell in an inhand web halter and the judge told her she would have expected him in a bit. I have a welsh cob who I want to show he is 5 years old and will be shown in hand bridle and bitted.

So will follow this thread incase anyone has more experience showing Welshies... I have shown inhand many Native breeds but not yet my sec D

xx

Thanks for that. I thought a show bit might be too flashy for M & M classes? Would he need a flat caveson noseband or are the stitched fancy ones permissible?

I have three types of bridles, one is a stitched bridle, a handmade raised but unstitched bridle, and a flat caveson noseband. My ponies have done well in all the bridles but I am thinking of having more flat noseband bridles made because I think they look nicer, depending on getting the thickness of noseband right for the pony's head.

At 3 I would be showing in a simple snaffe bridle. Welshes are shown by fast runners showing their flashy paces and a lot of welsh showing is horrendous ( think sticks with flapping plastic bags etc.) Don't get too seriously involved in inhand showing if you want a nice ridden horse!

What @eml you mean they scare the horses to arouse them and get them to show off????
Yes they do, not too bad at local level, but if you get into County or breed classes then its not for the feint hearted, you need a pair of good flat shoes and you need to be able to run fast to keep up as you will need to show the extension - get plenty of practise - we show Welsh A in hand and its very competitive.
Go to a few shows and check the classes out and you will see what is expected, if you are both new to it then get some local shows in
and some experience under your belt, the main thing is for both of you to enjoy the experience and be comfortable with it when/if you decide to do higher level.

I won't be doing it at a high level, I'm just going to try it for fun. I really want something to do out and about while he's still too young to ride and so he gets used to the show scene. Where I live showing options are limited too so I won't be particularly competitive, not the other hand I want to get it as right as I can! Thanks for all your comments, keep them coming please as I'm a total newbie to this discipline!
