Bear with me! This could be long.
So today the time I arrived at the yard didnt coincide with my "womble hacking approved times" (ie ... it was school kicking out time and roads were mad) so we decided to school.
Im glad I decided to change my bit before I left! He hacks out in a full cheek snaffle, but I remembered how bad he was to school in the field and put a 3 ring in him with 2 sets Of reins so riding him in effectively a french link hanging cheek (which is what I eventually want to move to so we can have a go at a bit of dressage) with the second rein as a back up.
He hates schooling with a passion and can be a pig. He finds bending hard and schooling boring. He sets his neck and sets off up the field back to the others when he's had enough. The 3 ring is the only thing he seems to have more respect for.
We did around 40 mins including warm up and cool down, and had about 20 mins of arguing and 10 mins of nice work, some nice turns of the forehand, some lovely canter transitions and even managed to canter a circle a couple of times.
Problems we had were trotting! In the end I had to switch to my back up rein to regain some sort of control. He can bend nicely on his right rein but he is horrendous on his left rein and just sets his neck and goes in any sort of direction he pleases. Eventually we managed a few nice circles without to much problems but only after switching to back up reins.
So my question is any ideas on improving his bend (yep I know its still early days but this is an ongoing problem from last year)
we do transitions, TOTF, a little leg yielding but hes really bad on his bad rein.
It was hard to school with a juney ...
Sweaty cob and happy mammy! Well he did eventually behave
