Hey all! So I have had Amber for a year and a 1/2 now, my old trainer found her for me, anything regarding her past is very clouded, I dont know a lot, if anything about her from before I got her. I was told she was green broke walk/trot/canter but the first time I got on her she was very nervous and didnt know anything, I wouldn't be surprised if I was only the 2nd or 3rd person to ever get on her back, and she also had severe bridling issues when I first got her.

Anyway I was told when I got her that she's a 1/2 percheron 1/2 thoroughbred. But I've gotten a lot of comments when im asked her breed that that doesnt really seem to fit her, I've even had comments that she looks like she might have a little fresian in her! So I really don't know, Im not great at guessing breeds, I know she has draft in her, thats obvious, but thats all i can really see.

I would like some opinions, do you think she looks like a 1/2 perch 1/2 thoroughbred? Or something else? Thanks!!

I'd call her a dark bay mare!

I used to ride a horse of unknown [to me] breeding, I later found out he was 50% TB, dunno what the other 50% was - possibly Irish Draught, he was nearly 18hh and very chunky.

Maybe Amber is similarly bred...?

I do think that she is 3/4 tb and 1/4 draft, perch or shire or something, but trainer thinks the same! She definitely has draft in her, but I dont think she's 1/2 draft. She's a big strong solid girl (she needs to be to haul my big butt again) but not all that "drafty" does that make sense? lol

She reminds me of a Irish Draft X TB (not sure of %) that I used to ride. Lovely horse he was.

Amber is gorgeous btw :)

I would put in another vote for IDx poss with TB - I wouldn't say there's draft in her as such, in that the ID types derive from a draught type but I would be surprised if you were to find out a parent or grandparent were a full draft breed.

She has a beautiful head

Irish Draughts aren't drafts as such - they're more like a warmblood. They are chunky horses that were designed to be ridden across fields, pull a cart, and draw the plough.

Given that IDs seem to be very popular in America I'd say she's more likely to be part ID than Percheron or Shire.

I think you just put those pictures up so we could see what a beautiful big bay girl she is!:wink:

She is stunning, wonderful conformation and so glossy and strong. I love the one when she is trotting straight at camera, she looks so playful.

Can't tell what she is from her looks really - but I would go with Irish Draught x TB.

At first glance I'd have said a Warmblood, which is essentially heavy horse crossed with Tb, which is probably what she is. If you're in the US percherons do seem to be the default heavy horse, so perhaps she does have some in her, but there's more thoroughbred than draft horse in her looks to me. Maybe a 3/4 cross like someone suggested?

Percherons mares put to a TB stallion make nice warmbloods a breeder close to us has quite a demand for this cross it doesn't take much to breed out the huge chunkiness in this combination so I think it is quite possible plus percherons lack the feather of most other draught breeds. she does have a lot of width across the chest.
