If your horse cuts himself and your worried about the flys getting into the wound, pierce about 4 garlic capsules ( the smelly ones not odourless) and dab aroud the outside of the cut. You can rub across the cut as it wont hurt but if you do this you might want to squeeze the capsule onto the cut without the cottonwool.
