I am really bored with schooling at the moment. I am working on getting my horse going forward. So we do lots of trot work interspersed with a little walk and canter. The emphasis is on forward movement. I try and do lots of different movements, circles, serpentines etc. I was thinking the other day that some music would help to make it more fun and would help us to develop some rhythm. Yeh man!

Does anyone have any good pieces of music that they ride to, for the different paces. I remember seeing a dressage display to 'Greased Lightening' from the musical Grease. It was perfect for a lively trot.

Hope you can help. I think Ben is open to all musical styles, but will let you know his preferences!

Regards
Cathy

I've seen people ride to "Man, I feel like a woman" by Shania Twain and I've ridden to a number of songs by Garth Brooks. (Quite Ironic really considering I only ride english and he's a western singer!) :p

You could also try some more unusual stuff to ride to - the version of adagio for strings done about 2 years ago - it had a kind of drum and bass thing going in the back ground - If I can find it I'll tell you who it was by.

Other similar tunes like Robert Miles' "Children" are good too as they have a definate beat to them

Have fun

Nicola

i think you can buy tapes that have been done specially for dressage to music (i may have dreamt this but i'll check back thru some mags!) - otherwise i guess it's a case of listening to perhaps some of your favourite music and picking out tracks that have a 3 beat or 4 beat tempo that you can vary horses gait to. Trying to think what music i've seen people ride to and the only thing that comes to mind at the moment is Robbie Williams and Let me entertain you (but that was the Met Police team!)

I've tried riding a couple of times with an mp3 player, and my selection was classical music all the way :).

Ravel's Bolero is nice for progressive work (walk, trot and then canter). Vivaldi's Spring works good for more animated trot and canter. Ride of the Valkyries by Wagner is an obvious choice for canter work (quite a hoot let me tell you!). Star Wars' Imperial March is hilarious for more colected trot work ;).
By far my favourite, though, is Strauss' Blue Danube. It surprised me by working very well with all paces... at least with me. It really gave me a felling of dancing with Pimpao.

Unfortunatly riding with earphones is hardly the best of solutions, so I rarely do it now :(

Thre is a tape specifically done for riding to, I think the BHS produced it some years ago.

There are also some good CDs done by Isabell Werth for riding to. I got them from Germany by ordering over the net, never found them here. If you want to find them try www.voss-reitsport.de

It also depends on your preferences (and horse's - ask Monty about Rebel and the Barron Knights :D )

I do 'work' tapes ( and CDs now as I have a CD-writer) that have music on to suit my horses' paces. 15 - 20 minute warm-up with a couple of pieces each for walk, trot and canter. Then usually trot and canter sections with walk pieces in between for breathers. The tapes are fairly convenient at 45 minutes. I tend to fill the CDs and then I can miss tracks out if I want.

Hee-hee. I thought the Barron Knight were really funny, and had quite good riding possibilities! Most disappointed when Rebel had other ideas, and shot accross the school from A to X in 0.3 seconds!!! Never mind.

Lgd - which of the Isabel Werth CDs do you have and what do you think of them. I've seen them advertised but have never heard them. I also usually make my own but it is nice to hear something fresh and I've run out of ideas - fed up of hunting through the music library. Most of the British riding tapes I've heard I'm not too keen on, they are all a bit bland somehow and you hear them again and again.

lol, I have the habbit of when I'm listening to a song on the radio I will listen to the beat and go" Oh this is perfect trotting music..oh, you could go into canter here!!", lol, my family think I'm mad! Sometimes, I'll just start rising in my chair if it's good trotting music!! :D

Pam - there are about 18 in the set now, although some are for vaulting and quadrille so I don't have those. I've got about 12 of them now and there is a huge selection of music ranging from very recent pop tunes and pop classics to classical and easy listening, ther is even a christmas one (sorry Monty I didn't get it until after Christmas). Some of them have bonus tracks on with kur music already linked, and quite a few have cuts done for entry music as well. The quality is very good and I would reckon that I had only got one or two of the tracks from anywhere else - and that is saying something as I have a HUGE selection of music suitable for riding because I specialise somewhat in music freestlye. There is a good range of beats per minute so there is something for all horses, although I must admit I don't think they have always counted the bpm quite correctly - a minor point and one that does not really bother me. I've found music to suit both of my mares (who are very different), my friend's big youngster and my other friend's Fell Pony. I got very good service from voss-reitsport, the CDs arrived very quickly and when a disc had been left out of a pack by mistake they got it to me in 48 hours by air-mail (better than most Brit companies, I'm ashamed to say).

Lgd - thanks for the info. I'm going to order a couple. I didn't realise there were so many in the collection, now I'll have to decide which ones to order.
