What do you use and why?
Which do you find is the best option for FREE books?

My friend has a smart phone that allows you download e readers and the kindle mobile. But is not finding many free or available for uk.

So kindle verses smart phone.

I like my kindle - currently has just over 170 books on it, of which I actually paid for 6 all the others have been freebies!
I've not tried the smartphone app but I can't imagine I'd enjoy trying to read a book on such a small screen tbh, I imagine the font size would be smaller than my ageing eyes could comfortably see :frown:

I quite fancy having a kindle as I love reading and hate trying to prop the 'floppy' page up when I am in bed with the book on its side. I always end up propping myself on one elbow which then goes dead:frown:. i intended to have one for my birthday this week but I forgot and just spent £70 on a hairdo instead. Hummm.....Christmas?

I love my Kindle. I have a smartphone too but that would be a bugger to read a whole book on that tiny screen (I just turned 40 though so teens may feel differently about that lol)

I have a Kindle.
That is the physical item on which one reads the mobi file type.
I also have the Kindle software on my computer and smart phone too.

On Wikipedia you will find a list of e-reader types, the software and the files they will run. There is a programme called Calliber which will convert one file type to another.

My smart phone came with Kobo e-reader software already loaded. You can read e-pub files on it. I like having the odd book on my phone for short train journeys.

Many of the sites with free (out of copyright) books now offer you a choice of file type. You choose which to download.
However, outside the USA the Kindle and Mobi files are not as universal. It is easier for instance to find Russian language books in e-pub. But that is no worry as you can convert them if you want to read them on a Kindle.

OH and I bought Kindles because the i pad is not good for reading out of doors in bright sunshine, and because the Kindle is cheaper so we can have one each. But you dont get colour on a Kindle, it is designed for text, so think about what sort of books you want to read. But it is an absolute blessing to be able to go on holiday as we just did without having to pack any books. And it is brilliant being able to buy books over wi-fi while travelling. You dont run out of things to read.

Looking for free books and observing copyright is a bit of an art. For many English language classics, Project Guttenberg is a good starting point. I know a site for Russian books. I guess you just need to Google and experiment?
I bought a Kindle for my grand daughter and got hold of all the classics I wanted for her. If you want something specialist like classic books on horsemanship, or exploration, it is harder, but there are some good things out there.

I have a kindle and when going away got halfway to the airport before realising it was plugged in still charging at home! :banghead: So I downloaded the Kindle for smart phone app, it synced all my books I wanted over to my phone, and where I was in them, and actually I didn't find it too bad to read off my phone (although my samsung screen is not exactly small...) because the fonts not small you just turn the page a lot, but it did eat phone battery and I was glad to be reunited with my kindle!!

I download some free books, and some when they are cheap - I keep an eye on the kindle website.. They also have a daily deal?

My OH has a kobo, he was moaning that the books are more expensive and if you buy anything off amazon you have to convert it before reading it on the kobo but despite that he likes that too!

I use my ipad as an e-reader. I have thekindle app. on it and get my books from Amazon. I also have the Kindle app on the computer, so my books are on both in case one fails and I lose everything!! If i didn`t have the ipad then I would definately buy a Kindle.

I have a kindle and an iphone and use the kindle app on the phone as well.
I love both but at night I tend to use the Iphone since the kindle has no light and the one I bought for it is broke >.<
The text on both can be changed to as big as you want as well.
Plenty of free books are available for the kindle though it does depend on what you want.

I have a Kindle. Ipod touch will also have a kindle reader but the screen is too small for prolonged reading so the kindle screen is better.

Sounds like my friend could do with a kindle then.
Are they fairly idiot proof to use as i may get one. I do now reading books, but sometimes browsing for them and buying quicker if i could just download.

Anyone got the new kindle touch?

I have an ebook reader on my phone and I've also just got the Kindle Touch 3G and it's an amazing bit of kit, I can buy the Sunday Times without getting out of bed! Much prefer the kindle for reading as it's a non-glare screen and the battery lasts for ages.

Really easy to buy stuff for the Kindle, I can either shop on amazon on my laptop and send it over of I can search the stores in seconds and it downloads really quickly.

Wish I'd bought one sooner! (I.e when I was commuting to London a couple of times a month, would have saved me carrying a tonne of books!)

I finally decided on a kobo touch.

Did not know you can convert as used the kindle app on my iphone.

Was kindle bound til i played with a kobo and was less then half the price of the kindle.

I like the megapacks. 25 ish books in one download. Small cost but well worth it.

They are fairly idiot proof yes, if the friend has a wireless modem, the kindle will just connect and she'll need the password only once.

Not that friend is an idiot, but her choice words. So made me wonder how technical they actually are.

Kindle is the best thing ever!! I swithered about getting an Ipad but I have to confess that I dont like them and I wanted to be able to read in sunlight. Plus I wanted the battery to last.

It does exactly what its designed for - you read books on it. I wouldnt buy text books or "horsey" books - I only use mine for reading novels. I dont check my emails or listen to music with it - I dont find it very good for that but for reading novels it cant be beaten!

Erm and on the Amazon best seller list - 50 shades of gray ;)
