How to check a second hand trailer?

Also depends what sort of budget you have as to what condition/age trailer you're looking at?

We didn't have a huge budget and had phoned around for quotes on new flooring, servicing etc prior to buying one. Ended up spending £600 on an excellent condition Rice Beaufort (approx 15yrs old) that needed a new floor, slap of paint, brakes and electrics looking at and a general service. Spent £300 on all those and OH managed to do the electrics.

First thing try and get the serial number. It will either be on a plate on the bottom right at the front of the trailer or stamped into the A frame. You can then check with Rice when it was manufactured, the exact specification and weight. Also you can check on trailerwatch website to see if its been registered stolen. Check all the lights work including the interior (rewire an interior costs £60). See if it has a double floor (top boards run widthways but look under the trailer and you should see bottm boards running lengthways) Check the floorboards - if they are starting to rot anywhere you are probably looking at a new floor. Although everyone panics when it needs a new floor they really arent expensive - I think I was quoted £175. Check the brakes work and all the partitions move if they are supposed to. New brake pads on Rice are about £50. Check there is sufficient tread on the tyres and you could also get underneath the trailer and check for corosion in the chassis - look for rust and knock at it with a screwdriver. If it goes through dont buy it! Finally check the ramps lift and drop gentlyish otherwise could be a sign that the springs are worn.

Ask how old it is, how often it has been serviced, when it was last serviced, how often it has been used, how far the journeys where, when the last floor was put in, how it has been stored.
