My OH works in a school and helps kids with their career choices when they reach the upper school. She has a very good student who looks to be maybe getting 5 highers at A but is horse daft. Her ideal job would be working in a stable perhaps as a riding instructor.

My wife asked me what other jobs she could do that would use her academic talents but would also allow her to work with horses. We thought of vet school but neither of us is really that involved in the horsey world so I thought I would ask on here for advice.

A well paid job would be nice.

Well paid, reasonable hours are two phrases that just don't go with equine careers sadly. You can do apprenticeships into the racing industry, look at equine nutrition or go into equine research perhaps?

Oh physiotherapy/Chiropractor ? Equine nutrition is another good idea, vet also is a good idea as if she is still interested / passionate about horses she could probably specialise specifically somewhere in the equine industry ? Racing even ?

With good grades I tell most of the young people I know to choose a great non horsey career to afford to have horses for fun...unless you have land and can finance your own set up stable work is a road to nowhere. Most Equine degrees lead back to the same jobs as well!!

This was my first thought but the girl seems to have set her heart on a career with horses. A few of the lawyers at my firm have horses or ride regularly. Even teaching with the proper degree and get seven weeks off over the summer.

Teach with a proper degree, do BHS exams in holidays while at university and get teaching job in one of the many private schools that have attached equestrian facilities offering BHS quals as an added extra ciriculum activity...best of both worlds!!

What about a business or marketing career with a horsey lean to it? Or an undergrad in horse management with a post-grad in business? All the companies within the horse industry need these people: feed, insurance, retailers. Horsey mags run regular features on careers within the industry.
