has anyone on here had or waiting for a hip op. ? please can you tell me what the first signs of something wrong were? does this sound like i should go to the doc.? my hips seem to lock in position when ive been sat for a long stretch, such as driving in the car, when i cant straighten afterwards, and have to do it gradually, which takes a couple of minutes. this has happened off and on for about ten years, but recently, for the last week or ten days, my hips hurt where the thigh bones meet it, continually. it feels a bit like the thighs are trying to pop out of the joints, a sort of pressurized pain, and at the same time i am having a lower back pain, which is not on the spine, its between the spine and the hip bones. its mainly when i am walking. i'm reluctant to go to the doctor, if its just generall aches and pains, arthritis, just wondered if any of you have had this?

I used to suffer with my hips which was a worry as my mum has had both hips replaced. Mine have sorted themselves out so very little pain now and long may it last. My mum could hardly walk prior to the operations but doctors are reluctant to do hip replacements if you're still quite young as they only have a lifespan of I think 10 to 15 yrs so will need replacing again. Only you know how painful it is but would suggest a trip to the doctor if it's causing you lots of pain - they may be able to prescribe painkillers to help. Since my mum had hers replacedf she is 100% better and can now do everything.

I would go to the doctor and put your mind to rest. The longer you leave it the worse it could get on the other hand there may be nothing wrong and then you can get on with life without having to stress yourself more. It sounds similar siatica (bad spelling). After all we may as well use the NHSwhile it is still free!!!!!

Oh just lost my original post somehow..... Yeah I would go check it out with the doctors just in case. My daughter is 18 and has terrible trouble with popping joints I think due to strain caused by dancing. She also has trouble with her wrists and knees. She has to physically click her hip back in place and is very painful and you can hear the clonking sound.

I'm going to the doctor tomorrow morning with the same thing. Its particularly my left hip but the right one is starting to play up too:(.

When I get off Arnie I have to lift my right leg forward on the saddle to unclick it, then the left leg, then put the right leg back where it should be, then finally, swing my left leg over his neck and slide down:o. Its not very elegant but we get there.

I find a couple of ibrofen before I ride really makes a difference but I thought I should probably get it checked. It sometimes goes when I am walking too unfortunately.

thanks for your replies. it's not sciatica, as no pain going down back of leg- ive had that before, and i do have arthritis anyway, so have prescription anti- inflams. i will ask when i next go to the doctor, for routine meds. update, but wanted to ask around first, as hate going to doctors. i didnt explain it well tho'. the joint pain is not at the back of my thigh/ hip joint, it is at the sides, as if the thigh ball joint is pushing against the sides of the hip socket. hence asking about symptoms when your hips start to go, as someone told me that her hip replacement was because of pain in her groin, just wondered if it can occur anywhere in pelvic region, or if it is always in the groin area.

Just reading your thread with interest as my mum was admitted to hospital yesterday with pain in her groin which developed last thursday very suddenly after turning a bit sharpish. Doctors took xrays and one said it shows a fracture in her hip but now they have said its not a fracture, but cronic osteoarthritis. Will hopefully know more tomorrow but doctors are saying that they are going to discharge possibly tomorrow with strong meds and an out patient appointment with a view to a hip replacement. She already has very bad back and can hardly walk. So this is just another blow for her. Hope its not a fracture but just a trapped nerve, but so far the meds that have been perscribed havent touched the pain.

Hi lynnemh
Having just had my hip replaced, experience tells me that I should have gone to the doctor and had X rays taken a lot sooner than I did. I spent about 2 years and a lot of time and money on chiros, physios and sports therapy thinking my pain was muscular only to find out from the X ray that my joint had worn away with arthritis.
This is no downer on the above professions, I swear by my McTimoney practitioner, but more a case of me just thinking it was a bit of creaky old age, and the inevitable aches and pains from riding and probably not wanting to consider it might be arthritis.
So do go and see the doctor and get the full picture (no pun intended !) And if you do need an op then mine has been a great success and I am now back riding 6 months after the op.
