Hello everyone, I haven't been on this forum for a very long time :(( Well we have now acquired a young Shetland - vet thinks she is about 3. She is incredibly friendly and inquisitive and happy to wear a headcollar but she doesn't have a clue how to lead (why would she! she came from a place where she was just out with a big herd and didn't have much handling), she either tries to run in front of you, or pushes against you trying to rub and groom you, which is a nightmare when you're trying to bring her in from the field with her bezzie mate the NF pony in the other hand! As we don't have any experience with youngsters any suggestions on how to teach her to lead properly would be very gratefully received....

Echo the above. Response to basic commands is so important. I always used to combine voice commands with a guiding hand/prod. Great book is perfect manners by Kelly marks. Used that a lot when establishing ground work with my boy as a 2/3/4 year old.

Have you got another pony she gets on well with to give her a lead.

We often use another horse to show them the way forwards.
