Got my feedback for my latest quantum savvy assignment which is doing my skills test at liberty. Includes doing full forequarter and hindquarter circles, backwards and sideways with and without contact all as groundwork.

Feedback wasn't too bad got told to get Harvey's weight back more so that he doesn't move his hindquarters as much in the forequarter yields.

Today I also practised out spirals assignment as that is yet another one I haven't managed to pass yet. In the assignment you have to back up on a 22ft line then send to the right for two laps and then spiral in from a trot to face you, then back up again (with contact) and send to the left and do the same, then do the same but incorporating a jump followed by four changes of direction all on the 22ft line.

I'm still findin it hard to get the spiral on the left in trot and soft. Have also been practising my back ups with contact and a bit more speed.

Getting there anyway.

Piccolo hasn't been doing much recently as it has been a bit too wet and windy. My daughter Boo has announced that she isn't too keen on going to school full time however as she "won't have time to ride, so might have to miss school!" I have a feeling the reality of being 4 is going to upset her lol.

Forgot to mention the other day I got a letter saying I (and Harvey) have won a award at our local riding club. We have been going to their shows as they do a nice mix of SJ (from very small!) dressage and showing. They operate a points system but never thought we'd actually get a award from it!!

I don't know what the award is for until I go to collect it though which is at the prizegiving on the 22nd October.

Very exciting, I never did pony club or competitions as a child due to lack of own pony so it's sort of getting what I wanted to try and get as a child lol.

6th October - Harvey gets a haircut

Harvey was really good at being clipped today especially as he wasn't exactly keen on it last year (was a bit edgy last year but not too bad).

Opted for a chaser cut, as that's where he sweats the most.

Was really pleased with it! I don't clip him, I pay someone else to but for £15 I think she did a really good job.

As you can see Harvey has also put back on that little bit of weight he lost a month ago. I've added speedibeet to his feed which has helped a lot.

oh and I don't know why Harvey does but he tends to like pulling hay out of his haynet and dropping it all on the floor. Does the same when hay is loose in the stable, loves to drop it over the stable door. All teeth have been checked!

and some pics of Piccolo, otherwise she's going to start getting jealous. Piccolo is very fat! and seems to be finding the rainy weather entertaining and loves galloping up and down the field at the moment, unfortunately not always dodging all the trees in time lol.

9th October, 2010

I haven't been too well for the last week or so, really tired and foggy especially. Had a blood test and it has come back as my liver is misbehaving badly again (and I hardly ever drink!). Got to see doctor to discuss but she wants to send me for a liver scan and another blood test in a few weeks time. I've been really itchy and bloaty too, seem to have tripled in size in the last week, due to water retention I think.

Anyway, it means I haven't been doing much with the ponies....but Boo has been going stir crazy having to go a whole week at school without seeing them. So I promised today she could have a 'pony day at the yard'. To my surprise her older brother Luke wanted to come too. Luke is only 14 months older then Boo and used to ride when younger but since starting school he hasn't really had the time. He attends a specialist speech school as he is verbally and physically dyspraxic which means he hasn't got very good muscle control or co-ordination. His muscles are either very tense or completely floppy and he finds things like running, hopping and skipping very hard to impossible. He did very well today though and has decided he'd like to come more often at the weekends with Boo.

Luke has also asked for some camoflauge style jodhs he's seen in Robinsons catolouge and some riding boots lol.

Anyway with Boo today I for the first time ever gave her a sort of lunge lesson (Harvey's first ever lunge lesson too!) It did mean I could 'lead' but also instruct her a bit better too. We mainly concentrate on having fun as she's so little. so today she rode without reins as we concentrated on getting her rising trot.........she CAN do it now! which on Harvey is no mean feat as he has a bouncy trot and she is tiny! and also concentrated on stopping with your body and 'going' with your leg aids.

Boo also attempted her first canter ...................and fell off  Harvey went really nicely into canter but then sensed her coming off balance so stopped which didn't exactly help as she then slid nicely off his shoulder onto her bum. Harvey stopped and looked at her as though to say "what you doing there" and looked very concerned. Boo seemed amazed that you can actually fall off lol but after a hug she got back on and wanted to keep trotting! We've decided to leave Canter for another day as although not big Harvey is a long way to fall (13.2hh) when you're only 4.

With Luke, because he hasn't ridden for a long time and was quite nervous we went for a fun walk round the field with Luke calling out whether we should turn left or right and concentrating on looking where he wanted to go and looking between Harvey's ears. He also tried a few small trots. Again Luke rode without reins but held a webbing strap on the saddle I also tried to help his confidence by getting him to ride with one hand on his head etc.

When child rode the one left liked to take photo's so most of these were either taken by Boo (Rebecca) or Luke

Anyway here's some pics.....

We have had a few 'moments' recently where Pic has decided being ridden isn't actually that much fun, so we're trying to work through these. She doesn't do much, stops and tries to nip feet but other then that not a lot, she does try and nap a little sideways as well.

That sounds like a really fun day. Your ponies and kids seem to get on great and are really well behaved. I'm hoping that by the time my youngest is 3 then we might have a similar set up with a family pony that everyone can ride. Just need to lose my baby weight now....

I'm STILL trying to lose mine MP lol even though my youngest is now 2 lol.

Sunday 10th October

Didn't feel too well today so wasn't planning on doing a lot when I got to the yard, Brought Piccolo in for a while with some hay and lunged Harvey for about 5 minutes working on transitions and warming up, then did about 30 mins ridden schooling with Harvey. Concentrating mainly on circles and transitons.

I forgot to put my half chaps on and found that the stirrup leathers rubbed a bit and my lower leg was less stable, why is that? As a kid I NEVER rode using half chaps as they just weren't about then so why is it so odd to ride without them now??

Anyway then took Harvey for a walk in hand around the block - about 15mins. He was really spooky and looky, more so then he has been recently.

Got back and noticed he was really sweaty too, even though he's been clipped. All sweaty on girth and under the saddle flaps. Cooled him off and rugged up and fed them both.

Monday 11th October

Today I felt really bad when i dropped Boo off at school as she cried all the way to school that she doesn't have time for school as she needs to feed and ride her pony and play dora the explorer lol.

Piccolo does sound exactly like Bertie LF. Loves the Kids but a bit on
his terms.....his goal is the stables and his HAY:giggle:

I have to keep him on a short leadrein because I always have the feeling
that if he had 'had enough' he would have no problem in letting anybody
know:smoke:

Hmm,seems like Piccolo and Bertie have the same goals in life!

Friday 15th October

Today I concentrated on trying to get Harvey going on our spirals grounwork.

He does spiral in quite nicely with a little bit more resistance on the left rein, but I want him to start the spiral at a trot rather then coming down to a walk first.

Practised some sideways at the trot on a 22ft line using a fence which he is good at and then spent some time getting those spirals in.

He did quite well, but it was quite fustrating at times too. Also did some small jumps on the 22ft line with spiraling in after and also changes in direction at the trot on the 22ft line.

I am hoping all these spirals will help with suppleness and softness as well.

Saturday 16th October

Today I paid my daughter £1 to come and film my quantum savvy level 2 spiral assignment. It involves sending the horse backwards to the end of the 22ft line with positive contact eg. no loop in the rein, horse should take up the slack as you feed it backwards. Then sending to the right for two circuits of trot and then spiraling in followed by doing the same to the left. then repeating the above but with a jump in the middle. The four changes of direction while maintaining the trot. All to be done on a 22ft rope.

Well, it was interesting. Harvey decided he didn't really want to concentrate. He's great when he gets it right but if he does it wrong he seems to get cross! After several attempts we did manage to get it filmed but it's not as great as it could be. It's our third filmed attempt at this assignment I have submitted....I do think Harvey is getting bored with it as well so hoping to pass it soon as it's turning into a right bugbear!

Sunday 17th October

Harvey still doesn't seem right but isn't 'off' that much so gave Boo (4) and Luke (5) another lesson on Harvey. Boo has been getting the hang of her rising trot really well and can now do it fairly easily even on Harvey who is bouncy. Unfortunatley while she was learning I took away her reins and practised on the lunge but when I decided today she could have her reins back she took them back for 5 minutes and then said that she's rather not have reins and just go fast instead :help: So we did just a few minutes of rising trot and then I tried to make taking the reins back fun by getting her to weave through some cones.

Luke prefers a slower pace so he loved having his reins back and steering around the cones. He even had a go himself off lead rein with me walking beside. He also had a few quick prctises at rising trot which he finds hard (due to his dyspraxia) but is trying really hard at and nearly getting there! He reminded me today he needs some jodh boots and jodhs so will be adding them to his xmas list.

Here is Harvey's 'off' thread

Wednesday 20th October.

Today the farrier is coming.

I decided that I would lunge Harvey 'properly' and see even with getting him to work with impulusion and 'through' what would happen re him being a bit off behind. I didn't like doing it but I needed to know if he was lame or not really.

On the lunge he is definitely worse on the left rein and was putting any power from his quarters in on either rein. He didn't look teribly unlevel at walk, trot but still not tracking up and a bit short striding behind.

When asked to put more effort in from behind he got a bit upset and kicked out which he doesn't normally do.

I then cantered him briefly on the lunge to see if there was anything noticeable in canter, there wasn't really although he was a bit naughty (kicking out) at going into canter to start with. However when brought back to walk, trot work he was a lot more noticeably off. Especially on his left hind.

Farrier came out as in the thread link in previous post.

After the farrier had been he was fairly noticeably off in the paddock as well even in walk.

I also lunged Piccolo who was a little SH....! today. She is getting really fat! She was adament she wanted to trot on the lunge and didn't want to walk but did eventually get some nice work from her stopping and starting in walk and trot from voice. Then I asked for canter and we had a PICCY moment ! She decided that kicking out and galloping/cantering so fast she her tummy nearly touched the grass was the way to go and she looked really surprised and miffed off when she was knackered and I was stil there standing in the middle. She did this a couple of times before realising it doesn't actually do anything other then make you knackered and we got some nice canter transitions in the end.

Both ponies were stabled today to wait in for the farrier and neither wanted to go back out really! They will have to wait a few weeks before coming in at night though, want fireworks night out of the way first really.
