On an island
Following on from jesseys thread.........
What are the good things to look forward to? Here are mine.......
Storm's thick woollen coat that makes her look like a fluff ball with coal eyes
Less nettles and weeds about the place
Power mucking out in a morning to warm myself up!
No grass to mow in the garden
No flies or midges
Dressing them in their rugs for the first time (the novelty soon wears off when they are wet and soggy!!!)
Hearing them both snort with contentment when they bring themselves in and tuck into a pile of hay

Bad things......
Hmmm......Chloe's mud fever needs more attention (she has it all year round due to her cushings)
Mud
Mud
Mud......

I have to say I won't miss this summers flies and mozzies, they have been horrific. I look forward to crisp, cold, bright days, and bundling up for rides out.

The bad bits; poo picking in the rain, haying in the rain & wind, mud, ice & high winds that stop play, mud, puddles in gateways, soggy toes and knickers!!! :p

Lol yeah, say no to soggy knickers!:D:p

I am not looking forward to trying to sort Oscar's feet out in the winter. I have no idea how to manage it to be honest. Hopefully they will be on the way to recovery by then but if the timing really sucks we could be looking at a re-section just as winter rain and mud begins to turn the yard into a quagmire :-(

I have to say I hate the mud and the bad storms we seem to get now.

I do like making sure my boy has his comforts in winter, warm rugs, good feeds, nice fresh hay, his sheltered airy stable and it makes me feel amazing and satisfied when I'm doing winter chores, even when I'm tired from working and training and have been out all say in the bad weather myself :)

Hacking out in the freezing crisp days is amazing and riding in the hay field in the snow is wonderful, there are good sides to winter, hopefully I will have wheels again this winter so can get out more with friends for hacks and indoor activities :)

OH i so hope you don't have to do that .

I wont miss this horrible heat being sticky ugh with mosquito spray.
I soooooooooo hope we get more rain soon so everyone is not HOPING for FEET OF SNOW
to help the drought.
They seem to be getting more rain at the new place - I don't think there is a drought there.

I am looking fwd to sweatshirts and lol" Trousers" weather.

I love the look of freshly fallen snow as long its its not horribly deep and not for days on end.

All my animals love cold weather much better than heat for sure.

That is rotten luck. I remember the first winter at home with J when we had no facilities, it was hard managing his feet because he seemed to either have an abscess or lose shoes through crumbly tb feet. It was horrid with all the mud. Hopefully Oscar will be on the rigt track sooner rather than later. Lots of vibes for him.

it gets dark very early here, which is poo !! I do love winter when you can finally get in cozy ! Posy and PM have had an upgraded stable this year which im sure is going to keep then extra snug at night now when they need to be in :)

I'm on clay and on the south coast so no winter joys here :( I know being out is better for them but I do like tucking him up in a warm stable to give his feet a break from the horrid mud and going to bed listening to the horrible storms knowing that mine is tucked up in a warm bed. Not keen on the stable chores but needs must and it's exercise.

OK focusing on the positives:
Hunting! I've never hunted but I think if anything is going to wake Dylan up it would be that do I am going out with our local hunt a few times this winter.
Beach riding at Studland. Only available in the winter
Free arena time: as no one else rides in the rain and dark I generally have the arena to myself all winter in the evenings.
No flies.
A generally quieter yard. I love quiet time with my horses. I prefer the yard empty! (Am I sad?) In winter no one socialises up there much. They just do what needs to be done then leave. Whereas in summer it's a party every day up there.

The most annoying thing about winter for me (even more than the mud, wet rugs, cold fingers etc) is my nose - it constantly runs in cold weather and it's gross the number of soggy tissues I have in my pockets. Hate it. My hands crack and bleed if the temperature falls below about 16 degrees too. I was definitely not meant to live in a cold climate. Oh and I don't like the hassle of clipping either.

Like @KP nut I'm looking forward to (hopefully) hunting, although in previous years we haven't managed it very often - it's always 'too deep' or 'too hard and frosty' for Raf's precious legs or he's not very well. We went on a hunt PR a few weeks ago and hoping to go on another on Sunday and some hound exercises if possible before the season starts. It's Raf's favourite type of 'work' ever and I must say I prefer it in the good weather!

Can't wait for these flies to go though - they have been particularly bad this year, horrible things. We have loads of flies in the house too because now that I'm working from home a couple of days a week I have the back door open for the dogs, and the flies just invite themselves in. Hate them, but I'm trying really hard not to kill them because I don't like to kill another living creature.

@KP nut - who is your local hunt? Is it the Four Shires? I've been out with them a couple of times and love them, such nice people. Bit of a trek for us but worth it for the countryside.
