Friesian ancestry from early Roman times. Friesian mercenaries were stationed at Hadrian Wall working for Roman Army. Those mercenaries brought their own horses, which were very popular with the local population. They interbred with local ponies thus creating the Fell/Dale ponies. In black they're a miniature copycat of their ancestors...
Friesian horses are extremely beautiful and popular, especially with film industry. Last 35 yrs they were used for numerous historical and sci-fi spectacle films, (War/Clash of the Titans with a Friesian as Pegasus, Gladiator and Hungergames 1&2 with Friesians as carriage horses are very clear examples) ...
