My 4 yr old connemara, what should i be feeding her? She is a good doer & standing at 15.1. In during the day & out at night, hacking & ground work at the mo, due to her age. Any help appreciated.
Thank you
You feed what is needed to keep her at a suitable condition score and meet dietary needs. She may not need hard feed, though I'd always give either a balancer or general vit and min supplement unless feeding the recommended amount of a good feed - which you won't be. Hay and grass need to be at least 1.5% of her bodyweight a day.
You feed for work done.
So my guess is nothing besides a general vit and min supplement, small amount of chop to mix it.
If you feel you have to feed something, give fresh herbs. I pick various things and leave on the paddock on two places for her to find. Nettles or thistles.
Definitely a balancer or vit and min supplement to get all the necessary stuff in, then see how you go, if she looses weight then consider adding more calories with haylage, oils or hard feed.
