Pumpkin's had some problems with mites for a while, he has the injections, but they just seem to come back, and his feathers are (were!) so thick and long and luscious that they mites just loved to live in there and snuggle up. Vet said best thing would be to clip  I was gutted, I love Pumpkin's hairyness. So here is a before and after - his legs haven't actually been clipped yet, I've just cut as much off as I could with scissors and will attempt to clip them later - I've never clipped him before so not sure what his reaction will be... methinks he might be a touch jumpy :p

Anyway, now he looks all body and no legs, all out of proportion, and while it's nice and tidy I suppose, I DON'T LIKE IT!! But if it helps, then so be it. Anyone got any wonder cures for keeping mites at bay? He gets quite scabby and scurfy on his legs, probably from the mites.

If it is Mites then try :

Frontline
Dermo?????? Inj
Ivermectin injection

But I suspect it isnt mites. Cobs, heavy horses often get this grease/slash sores on the back of their heels and knee area.......Captain has suffered with it all his life. I too have to clip his feathers off. Have tried all sorts of products from Mud Fever creams to mite injections etc.

I keep him clipped which helps get the fresh air to their legs and dries them up. However since last Autumm I have struggled and am now using Sulphur and Pig Oil. So far so good. On our second application as it was really the worst I have seen it since owning him..My vet said it was mites on Captain...

Do you have any pictures of the area before you clipped him????

awwwe what handsome boy!! ( with or without!)

I hope you manage to get on top of his problem.

I would recommend washing the problem areas with malaseb shampoo, and applying frontline if its mites... but regardless malasab is a great shampoo for skin yackiness. As fas as i'm aware you have to get it from the vets.

He looks very pretty either way.

I have a donkey here that always gotten a skin problem here. Gave up on the Vet..if fact I will not have her on my place any more....but that is another story.
Nothing they used worked. Used Shapely's MTG,,,and keeps it cleared up. Oily feeling and smelling yucky..but boy the stuff works.
Works on all kinds of skin problems.

Personally, I think he looks fabulous without his feathers. :D

Haven't seen you on here for ages MMIK so it's good to have you back and the stunning Pumpkin. :D

My horse has a similar problem to Novice nics captain and in my experience keeping leg clipped definatly helps. Frontline and dectomax injections definatly work for mites but stand a better chance of the frontline working if legs clipped so it can work its way down to the skin!! I have posted pics in general health section of my horses legs have a look to see if the condition is similar! I no its not nice having to clip but its the best way to treat mites and other skin conditions this heavy hunks get!!!:) and your handsome hunk can definatly get away with the clean shaven look!!!:)

clip off the feathers and wash regularly with carr, day and martin lice killing wash. that's kept the mites at bay on my cob :)

Thanks for all the responses :)

taffyjay, I just looked at your post on the health section - that is EXACTLY how Pumpkin's scabby bits are!! He's got a few of those in various places on his legs. When i had him vetted, the vet just said he was a bit scurfy  I think cos he knew he was only vetting for a hacking ploddy horse he didn't pay too much attention. So far I've left alone and assumed it was just part and parcel of being Pumpkin, but I'd really like to clear it all up to make him more comfortable.

Peanut - no news is good news where I'm concerned... I am always lurking, but don't often have time to post... unless there's a problem! ;)

Thanks for all the suggestions - once I've got him properly clipped I'll see what I can get hold of shampoo wise, and give him a good scrub.

So then..... anyone know a company that makes a clipper that has no wires (battery operated as wires are dangerous horse eating snakes), and is completely silent? ;)

That's what's confusing me Nic, do I go with the mites theory and use a shampoo that will possibly keep them away, or do I go the other way and treat as you've been doing with Captain (Just been reading your posts in the Health section). I suppose the only way to find out for sure is to get a skin scraping done.

Oh Plumptious! Your poor feathers! But your mum is right, it's the only way to treat your lovely legs properly :(

Hello again MMIK it's great to see you de-lurking!

Ria gets mites too, we clipped and used Frontline for a while but with no lasting improvement. So finally we got her a Dectomax injection and it zapped the little beasties for ages. Unfortunately they've now returned, so she's going to keep her nekkid legs for a bit longer and has just had a repeat injection. If that doesn't work we'll chop her legs off and have done with the problem   :D

Skin scrape will at least show up if its mites. So it may be the best option. Especially as I have spent a fortune on lotions and potions that didnt work...Let me know how much your skin scrape costs you please as I may look into that next......:(

LOL Est :D
Nice to know we're not alone in the "bare white stumpy legs anonymous" group though ;) And that's just me, don't even get me started on Pumpkin! :p

Will do Nic, though I will probably see if anyone else on the yard is getting the vet out in the next couple of weeks and do a shared call out. Just this morning I gave Global Herbs a healthy profit boost with the Diareeze I just bought - 70 bloomin quid  Pumpkin's tummy goes to pot on the spring grass

He's lovely both ways but I know what you mean :D

Megs gets mites in summer, she stamps her feet which is usually the first sign. I used Frontline spray for dogs last year and it seemed to help. I've kept her feathers for now but will have them shorn if she gets upset :( I love her hairy but managing her has been the issue for me over the winter, hence clipping and hogging :(

think my skin scrappings cost around £35 but cant remember exactly. Jays condition started with mites but gradually got worse as you can see. Last 2 srappings showed no mites so the dectomax and frontline definatly worked on the little critters!!!!:) I think once i get some answers of this specialist (and hopefully i do) i will have to right a book, would make a fortune as its such a common problem:D
