Anyone know a comfy, not slippy, and inexpensive bareback pad to recommend? I've seen the best friends one, and it looks good, but I was hoping for some opinions. My chiropracter is encouraging me to ride bareback, but I'm nervous that I'll fall off, so I REALLY want something not slippy on the horse or on my legs!

I saw these bareback "saddles" yesterday and they intrigued me:

Anyone ever used them, or have another bareback pad they'd love to recommend?

I love my best friends pad, spent a whole summer hacking and schooling in it whislt waiting for a saddle. Definately worth the money :)

Bareback pad

I have been riding in a borrowed bareback pad for some time because of saddle issue and even now I have a saddle I have bought myself a pad so I can carry on riding in it at least once a week.

I really like the sheepskin ones - your bum seems to stick really well and they are super comfy. I got mine off ebay from equine whispers: http://www.equinewhispers.co.uk/barebackpads.html

They do an amazing (but v expensive) Christ lamfelle pad but also a cheaper Libra pad which is what I have just bought for £70. Expensive I know but after you've sat in a sheepskin one its hard to pay a bit less for a non sheepskin one. The bestfriend pad would have been my second choice as they are definately a good price if I hadn't got the Libra pad for a good price.

Hope that helps,

Di

Wow, those Baretek ones look lovely - I wish I had some cash!

I have a BestFriend, and like it very much. It worked best with the cob mare I used to ride, she was barrel shaped and it was superb, we could do w/t/c in the school and small jumps, and I stuck on despite her tendency to motorbike turns :D

I have used it for my own horse, but it's not so successful. He is young, bony and underdeveloped, and has very high withers. It is really hard to position the pad so that it doesn't drag down across his withers, I've tried combining it with a prolite numnah which has been a bit better but not great. TBH, I've ended up either completely bareback (and being very careful to sit clear of the withers (ouch!)) or using just the prolite strapped on with an elastic surcingle.

So a thumbs up for the BestFriend, but depends on shape of horse! By the way on both, it sticks like glue and never slips, and you can bung it in the washing machine :) My ideal tack ;)

i got one off ebay for £40. cant remember who the seller was but it's pretty good, really comfy!! has stirrups on, which i have always been told not to use on bareback pads, but it stays in place so it's all good!! love them in the winter, the horse keeps your bum nice and warm!
