Hi Farrier, my horse's feet are terrible. They are so brittle and just snap off. I'm lucky if her shoes last 4 wks. When she's been shod i use keratex hoof hardener just over the nails, also kevin bacon hoof moisturiser a couple of times a week. They seem to get better the colder the weather / time of year, any advice would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome.
Feel free to add your business details to the business section, name email etc etc.

How long have you been a farrier, do you specialise in rehab etc.

Hi Jayne,
It looks like new shoe's?
Can you take photo's of sole/frog/heels please.
Most brittle feet can be helped with a change of diet, plus correct loading of vitamins but can take you up to a year to get a good result. Suggest talking to your Vet: for maybe a blood test as something may be going on internal.
Back to the feet, if it has white line disease this would cause the wall to be weak and break, ask your Farrier to check first as this is normally the cause.
Good luck Mike.

Hi Mike, I have a question too - my horse has soft, crumbly frogs. I am painting her feet daily with the NAF sole hardening stuff but it's not doing much. She lives out. Is there anything you'd recommend?

Hi, been a Farrier for many years, all types of shoeing here and abroad, like to help with hoof problems/lameness ect: but with farriery it's not a cure all, we must work along side a Vet: and other professionals to get the best results to help you enjoy your hobby.

Hello and welcome indeed - great to have a farrier on board. But can I bit just a tincey bit picky and ask if there is any website, or link we could follow to check your credentials. Hopefully you are genuine and we are very lucky to find ourselves with a farrier joining the forum to help us all with our queries. :)

But one has to be a little cautious of immediately taking advice as gospel and correct from someone who randomly announces they are a qualified farrier on joining a horse forum. Particularly one that does have a large number of new and novice riders/owners. I hope you will take this query in the spirit it is intended, i.e welcoming but cautious. ;)

Hi Yeah,
I am a Registered Farrier of many years and was waiting to be checked as this is something horse owners should be doing anyway. My Reg Number is X753 at the Farrier Registration Office. Any advice I give is what I have learned over the years and while some may not agree i am open to correction but i cannot diagnose any medical conditions this is for a Vet: only.

OK thanks for that - but you can't search their records as far as I can see by that number alone and likewise it could be any farrier's registration number. Hopefully someone from Essex will come online shortly and they might well be able to verify your credentials for the other
forum users.

It would probably be really helpful if you could identify yourself as you are clearly declaring that is how you want to be viewed on the forum., usually if we have professionals on the forum, like saddlers, instructors etc. they are more than happy to be identified and it does help hugely for members to have confidence in their credentials. :)
