Farrier Dilemma

Horse came in lame on Thursday, first time in 4 years, hadn't been ridden for a week so I suspect he had done something in the field. Boxrested him for 24 hours on vets advice, in case it was a bruise somewhere about to come through, but she did say that it could take 48 hours. He was turned out Fri am but when I saw him that evening I could see he was still 'Ouchy' on a front foot. Brought him in, and looked at him again Saturday morning, sound in walk but in trot you could *just* see him favouring this foot, called the vet and they came out to have a look around.

She found a bit of bruising near the front of his toe and a 'stretched white line' (what's that ?) she did dig out a tiny amount of grit and dug around a little bit to shoe me the bruising. Advice was Bute for a week, box rest until Monday and have a look then, but also hot poultice in case he has an abscess brewing (he's unshod) poulitce has drawn nothing out, but when I saw him this morning he isn't lame anymore (but he is on 1 sachet of bute twice a day) and generally get a bit :timebomb: at being in. So he was turned out, I think he's still a bit short in trot. Spoke to vet again and she has said as he's not lame she advises get the farrier to come and look at him today or tomorrow. Herein lies my problem.

Farriers mobile is off but I have left a message on his answer phone. If he's not able to come out this week, I do have a few other numbers of good farriers, should I try them to see if they could out ? If I do have them out and they shoe him, my farrier will get arsy with me.

What would you do ?

Hmm. I think I'd be inclined to wait until you've spoken to the farrier; if he really can't come next week, then you can ask if he can suggest someone who can, but I think that's unlikely. You probably wouldn't find another who'd come out on a bank holiday, as it's not an emergency, and it would be better not to quarrel with a good farrier - they're hard to find. I'd keep on with the bute until you've done a week, then cut it down to nothing.

If I contacted my farrier on the advice of the vet I'd expect him to come out ASAP. He leaves gaps in his schedule for things like that and knows I'm not one to bother him unless necessary. He'd make a point of getting me. I wouldn't be happy with any farrier who wouldn't.

our farrier is much like yours - infact from whats been said I would have rung the farrier first and from similar on 2 occaisions with Charlie he has come out same day - not found anything but weakened the area with his search as tubbed and poulticed for a couple of days and hey presto - gunk- He didn't charge on eiher occasion - although I did insiist he took something to cover fuel - I do know that if he suspected anything other than foot he would have told us to get the vet - good farriers asre hard to come by when you get one then I wouldn,t risk loosing them... speak to him first and go from there...

Well I've left messages on his mobile and home phone this morning, still heard nothing  I suspect he won't answer calls as it's the bank holiday and he'll phone back tomorrow when I'm at work :banghead: If I don't hear from him tomorrow, I'll try another farrier. I suspect my horse would be lame without the bute .... :( I should have probably phone him first, but did the vet as the horse had a temperature originally.

If it is a really deep seated bruise it could take months to come out. Mine was absolutely hopping lame about 18 months ago - no abcess, had him nerve blocked and we knew it was below the fetlock joint.

Vet suggested leave him for a month and see what happens. He came sound probably all in all about 6 weeks later.

Took two farrier visits for that bruise to appear. Having said that it was the winter before last and the ground was rock hard.

If you rate your farrier, I would wait for him.

we used to phone the vet - but have had that many bloody abcesses to contend with we now start treatment, ring farrier and go from there - its a damn site cheaper as well - I have just come back from the field and it looks like Charlie is heading for abcess no:7 - weak white line job and wet & warm conditions just right for an abcess - so will tub and poultice in the morning
leave out and see how he goes hes going up to yard on Thursday for farrier so we will take him up early if necessary - ring farrier and see if he wants to come early or leave it as planned - we don't bute unless the abcess is proving to be stubbon and causing excess pain - we have it on stand by though...
