Hi! I am at college at the moment but studying a course I'm not enjoying and have finally made up my mind that I want to work with animals. The only problem is I don't know whether to become a vet nurse and study animal management level 3 or equine nurse and study equine .
I have done vet nurse experience and enjoyed it and work with horses all the time.
I was just really wondering what it was like working in either of the industries to help me decide?

dont you have to be a vet nurse first and then specialise as an equine nurse?
No one the courses are specialised so you do one or the other. They have pathways and so you have to choose during the first year to what you want to go down. The animal management you can do vet nursing and the equine course you can go onto equine vets. With both you usually go onto apprenticeships so that you get more experienced.
This is just what I have been told and read so think it is right, hahahah :l

I have looked into this. You don't have to do small animal vet nursing first but it is harder to find a placement
Ah okay, thank you for the information - very helpful!! :) :)
This must be why they say to get an apprenticeship after the course

If you don't like rodents, reptiles or birds. Go for horses :)
People do take all small animals to the vet.

I know it's not my thread but I will be doing equine. I guess it depends really would you like a mixture of everything though it would be more likely cats and dogs? Or mainly equine?
Yeah see thats the thing I am kinda stuck on. When thinking about it I do really prefer working with larger animals e.g. horses or cows, but I just don't know which route to go down as they are both so completely different.

The thing with doing small animal and the equine is you have the option of doing both. And at least you have the option of been able to 'pick' almost and you will do right small animals aren't for me. Or actually yes I like working with all of them not just horses.

Speaking from personal experience I would go down the Vet Nurse route, they do have to do an equine module. There is a shortage of small animal VN`s but there are very limited places for Equine VN`s. Have you done any work experience at a Vets?

If you don't know which course to do, I would take some time out and do some work experience in both fields. Go and spend time with a vet nurse and go and spend some time with an equine nurse. Work experience will mean that you are more likely to get a job at the end of your course and that you choose the right course for you now.

I have done some work experience with a vet nurse, but yes I shall do some with an equine nurse :)
