So this was Sapphire's first ride after being off with her fetlock injury.

She left the yard bright and perky and headed off on a hack. 20 minutes later a call from her trainer to say she was walking along no bother and just fell = she has made a terrible mess of one knee and a fetlock - the other one so she will have matching scars if she survives.

Vet called, recommended take to hospital so she is there now and waiting to hear how bad it is. If it is into the joint, or the tendon. I reckon a year off now. If we don't lose her due to infection.

I am utterly speechless about how unlucky can you and a horse be. We are all in shock. 20230618_084941[1].jpg 20230618_093650.jpg 20230618_095715.jpg 20230618_095718.jpg 20230618_095721.jpg 20230618_133730.jpg

Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sending huge amounts of healing vibes. I will keep everything crossed for a good outcome.
I was tired yesterday but even more so today, she loaded like an angel, thank god, and travelled well but took us around 2 hours there and 1 1/2 back.

Just heard from vets, scanned and x rayed her, the joint seems to be ok, but there could be an issue with the tendon. Head vet is in tomorrow so he will look at it all - he was the one who looked after Sasa and is very blunt.

Fingers crossed for her, anything that close to a joint is a worry and your vet was right to treat it as an emergency hospital case. I hope the tendon is ok - are they thinking it was injured in the fall or the cause of the fall? - and she makes a full and speedy recovery.

we don't know. It could explain why she fell. Brian who was riding her said she just went down like a pancake. He got a bad one, done his shoulder and hip. She walked sound the rest of the way home, i met him halfway. Andrew the head vet saw sasa, he is blunt in the extreme but at least he is seeing sapphire now not months later. They think there are no chipped bones and the joint is clean so far, the tendon concerned not a main one. I do wonder if she has a weakness there. She set off ears pricked perfectly happy and then this happens. I have walked the route, could see no blood on the road. Brian was ready for her to do a nap or a mini buck but he somersaulted over her head when she went down and landed on a hard surface, so he was walking wounded. And of course I have never travelled her, she went in first time, 2 hours to get there. I am utterly worn out after a heavy day yesterday.

Sorry to read this.

I am just wondering if the knee boot moved in some way and she tripped. It's not done it's job of protecting the knee.

It's worrying if a horse falls onto both knees for no apparent reason.

nope i couldn't believe it either, totally unexpected and devastating. Waiting for more information today, have asked them to go over her with a fine tooth comb to see if there is a reason why she just crumbled and fell, as she did not slip, stumble, trip. just went down. poor brian got a sore one he pitched off over her head. If she had done anything he would have reacted and might have kept her on her feet as she is a very good rider and he was expecting the odd nap or mini buck given it was her first time out in a while. but no, she was walking on happy as anything totally fine. Gutted doesn't cover it.

thought the fall could be caused by her being toed in slightly in front and if she has issues on her hinds she would be on her forehand too much. So she will need at least 3 weeks box rest and daily dressings and it will take a while no point in doing any neurological tests as she is too sore for them to give anything useful. The tendon is slightly abraded but hopeful it may not be permanent, joints seem ok. She could come home tomorrow but I need to get stable ready for her so probably collect on Saturday when we have a better idea how she is getting on

I'm so sorry to read this, what a terrible thing to have happened. I hope that she recovers quickly and that you get the answers you need.
I am trying to figure out how to manage her. Tomorrow I will dig out the old deep litter in her stable and order some new bedding and keep that for night time, and perhaps keep her in Buddy's stable during the day, as i have two double stables. That way I can do her five minutes in hand as a transfer between them twice a day so I can have a clean stable for her to go to morning and night - sounds like a plan. Daily dressings for months...i just hope i can keep her happy and calm after three weeks we should be able to leave her on the yard to amble around like before. I feel so sad for her.

Bless her and you - she must be the unluckiest horse at the moment. Do hope her recovery is trouble free, for her sake and yours.

I like the sound of transfer between Buddy’s box and hers. It might be silly but I did same with Storm because I thought a different box was just something different literally to break the monotony of box rest when she first re injured her tendon. It’s good you have your own setup to be able to manage her. I am sure you will cope and manage her when she comes home. Sending healing for her and energy for you.
