I am so sick of it now , it's freezing into blocks now and even when I crack it, it's just slush. So any suggestions?. Does the tennis ball in the water really work?
Are the buckets in a stable or is it for trugs in a field ?
For the big trug-type buckets in a field, you could try :
Stacking a few old car tyres and tying them together.
Line the inside with straw.
Wedge the trug inside the tyres so that it's surrounded by the layer of straw.
The straw should insulate the bucket and slow down the sides freezing up.
The tyres prevent the horses knocking the trug over, they hold the straw layer in place and also act as another isolation layer from the cold.
Don't forget to float a ball or bottle on the top - this also slows down the ice formation and the horses also use the object to break the thin layer of ice to drink.
PS. make sure the tyres are of a dimension close to your bucket so the horses don't eat the insulation straw !!
Hmm I put shavings in with my carrots to stop them freezing... Not sure that would work with water though! I have found in the past a ball in water does help
