Hello! Just being a worry wart here but thought I'd ask for your views/advice anyway!

My mare cut her lower leg 2 days ago.. quite a shallow cut and about an inch long, is on the lower "bulb" of her leg on the inside. Washed with hibbi scrub, dried and sprayed purple spray... seemed ok but has swollen up over night and is warm, I understand that this could mean it is infected.

I have the vet coming in the morning and she is in her stables today (which will make her unhappy :(

Just wondered how long these swellings normally take to go down? She is not lame and doesn't seem to have any discomfort. The cut has dried and started to scab but still warm and swollen.

Sorry to be such a worry wart it's just that in the 2 years I have had her she has not injured herself at all!

Thanks

when the horses' leg swells up we tend to hose it down from any internal brusing for around half hour- like us putting cold ice on ourselves!

If you do this 2 times a day the swelling will go down.

Is she lame?

Hi, no she is not lame. Also seems completely unbothered by it... doesn't take any notice if your press on the swollen area. I think maybe I am getting over anxious... now I feel bad about leaving her in her stable all day :(

Is anyone else as much of a worry wart as me?!

Yes, I'm a worry wart too :)

What I often do is put a cold pack on it for 20 mins 2x (just a regular ice pack, keep it on with a polo wrap) and see if that brings the heat & swelling down. If it makes any difference, then it's probably not infected, just healing, and keeping it up until it's no longer swollen is about all you need to do.

If it's not really helping, then you may need antibiotics...and if in doubt, get the vet :)

Hi Galadriel,
Glad I'm not the only one! The vet is coming in the morning just incase she needs antibiotics. The swelling has not gone down so I guess there is an infection there. Good news is that she was calm in her stable and not banging the door, just quite happily munching on hay! I drove like a bat out of hell to get up the stables worried that she would be stressed but she was fine.. especially when she spotted my bag with carrots and apples for her!

With swellings, I prefer to keep the horse out as I think it will just swell up worse with standing around. At least if they are out and moving about, it helps the circulation. My mare has some pretty nasty cuts on her legs at the moment but is still out (she goes batty in her stable) and the swelling on her knee is going down nicely :)

She's fine!

Hi,
Had the vet come and he said that she is fine :)
My friend had kindly put a poulitice on her leg yesterday and it had drawn out all of the muck and the swelling had gone right down. I got some antibiotics from the vet just to make sure :)

Worrying about your horse is like worrying about your kids, the only difference is that the horse cannot explain exactly where/if it hurts etc!
