I've recently moved to County Durham and am looking for somewhere to ride, I've tried some local schools but haven't been impressed and wondered if anyone knows of anywhere really exceptional. I've ridden for years on plods and have spent a lot of money not learning very much. What I want is private tuition on really good horses. I'm willing to pay anything and will travel anywhere in the Northeast for classical training. So does anyone know of anyone really good perhaps a private yard or freelance trainer who has their own horses, or a more specialist school? I've heard about Henri Plagg and am considering going to her but wondered if there was anyone else like her in the area?
Please rack your brains as I'm on the verge of giving up riding altogether if I can't find somewhere to really improve?

Many thanks in advance. :)

henri plag is very good, i've had a few lessons with her.

my friend has just started having lessons at low fold farm and she is very happy with it. she has her own horse but is doing ground work with him at the moment. I've not been but she is fairly particular so it's probably pretty ok. Each to their own though

if you print off their web page you get a free 30 minute assessment lesson so you could test the water for free!

Margret Hedley has a very good reputation. Thats Lowfold

Coppy Farm, Pockly and Penshaw are now getting a good reputaion.

South Causey is ok although I went there and was told by my friend after leaving the school that she was not sure who had taught me to ride but they had not taught me properly

But then again different people get on better at different schools

Hiya, I'm in Newcastle (in term time anyway) :D

Have you tried Ivesley? I've never ridden there myself but have heard good things, it might not be as specialist as you want though.

I've heard very mixed reports about South Causey, although I ride at their 'sister' school in Ponteland which is quite good.

Hope you manage to find somewhere good!

Ivelsy has a good repuation too round here.

Dont know much about Tilery as Phil only started that after I left. But I can put a safe bet on it that it will be good as I rather liked Phil as a riding insturctor.

My YO is winding down her riding school side as her BD judging and training folk with thier own horses is taking over, so she doesn't really have anything suitable for you now or I would have recommended her.

I would suggest the Perry's at Stotfold Crest near Hartlepool - they have a good selection of horses and a good standard of teaching.

Thanks for the suggestions

Many thanks for all your suggestions, there are definitely some there that I hadn't heard of.

I was having private lessons at Penshaw for a couple of months before Christmas and frankly it was rubbish. I was riding overworked tired ponies and my instructor was about 15 and only took an interest in me when her boss walked past the school. I think its largely luck when you start at a new school as to who you get and whether you get something out of it or not. Isn't it a shame riding schools are largely like this and that a lot don't care whether you improve or get anything out of the experience.
Sorry for the moan :(

Gingertom.

I'm inclined to agree with you there. We pay our money to get the best and sometimes it does not work that way.

I've just had my second lesson at Seagold Centurion Equestrian Centre in Hunwick. It's about 30 mins from me in Newton Aycliffe.

Personally I think it's great. Much better than the first place I tried near Darlo.

My instructor Joleen is lovely, and very easy to get on with. She makes me feel relaxed. She likes to keep me moving forward, once I've got to grips with one thing we move on to the next.

They've got indoor & outdoor schools and the horses seem really well looked after. They also seem to have a good range of horses & ponies too.
I looked at about 6 different schools and chose Seagolds as it's very clean, friendly & had everything I wanted at a reasonable price.

I'm pretty sure if you speak to them, they'll be able to help or at the very least point you in the right direction.

Drat if I can remember. Owner is on our yard. I'll find out. They dont do lessons its, for under privalaged kids if I remember rightly. Yes its in Newcastle

Yes, it's Stepney Bank, I used to ride there. It's a lovely place, and has lessons for everybody although it's main focus is RDA and underpriveledged (sorry, can't spell that!) kids as Miriam says. I'm not sure it's really what gingertom is looking for though.

Ok spoke to Susan who runs the place last night. They do lessons but since the tv show they are very hard to get. If Susans standard of riding is anything to go by then if you can get in I'd recommend it. Although she says she does not teach.

horseyrose - Susan took over from a Carol or Caroline Moor? any names along those lines ring a bell. That was back in 1993. She says it would be great to hear from any old members who went there

We ride at Ivesley and I think its really good. I have only tried one or two others in NE but I would never describe Ivesleys horses as over tired etc. Certainly seems better than Penshaw.

People who have been on riding holidays there also seem to love it. Worth a go, I think. All instructors are either qualified or working towards -and supervised.

I have also heard that Henri Plag is great - isnt it Northumberland where she practises?

Hi, sorry, I've only just seen this, haven't been on here for a while! I think I do know Susan actually, does she event? If she's the one I'm thinking of she had a nasty eventing accident a while back and was featured in one of the horsey mags? We didn't see her much because she doesn't teach, which is why the name didn't ring a bell! We were taught by a Caroline, but this was only about a year and a half ago. Were also taught by Paul and Helen. It must be crazy there now they've done the tv show, it was pretty busy to start with! That's the only reason we left really, they could only fit us in! The 4 of us had to share an hour's lesson, swapping ponies half way through! I did like it there though, especially when we got to go up to the 'stadium' and have a gallop. :D

Not sure as she only seems to hack Seren (serendipity) out. Please do get intouch as she would love to hear from past members. She dos say taht it is very hectic since the tv show. Poor soul is ran off her feet but always makes time for Seren. She is a dam good rider and personally I dont see why she does not teach.
