Advice Please (in a pickle)

My house
I have two horse at the moment, one was sold to me whilst on loan and the owner is supposed to be giving/loaning her to me (Bluey) but never get anything in writing so don't know where I stand (since August) and the other is Mac my friesian baby (age 3) who I bought in August.

I have a daughter aged 3 who I would love to start riding as I have 2 hours before my boys get home from school which would give me time, I have been told about a loan pony, old but bombproof 12.1 hh and am seriously considering having her.

My problem is this, is a 12.1 too big for a three year old (not realy bothered just wondering what people think:))

Would I be better of with a horse for each of us, I can only ride once a week through the winter by next summer Mac would be ready for riding properly and hacking out alone.

Plus OH would go mental if I had three horses, I just manage two, I just think 1 and a half horses would be easier? so three is not really an option, and I don't have the space.

I would like to know what people think as I'm thinking long term.

Please help!

I personally think that learning to ride on the right sized horse is a preoccupation with the British.

We are lucky in that we have a wealth of native breeds to choose from of varying sizes.

Many in the rest of the world aren't so lucky. They either don't have the range of breeds or the money available to be so chosey.

I know I am probably going to be in the minority here but I think that the temperment is far more important than the height :)

there is a 3 year old girl that goes out on our hunt on a 12.2 pony, canters along quite happily on a lead rein, i agree its more about temprament than size.

OK, I know this pony has a fab temperament, so I'm sold on the pony thing, but what do I do with my current situation?

I'm in a coffuffle:confused:

If there is no contract then legally you shouldn't have her. A contract will usually say how much notice you have to give to return the horse but seeing as there is non you should just be able to give her back pretty much straight away.

Regarding size of the horse, my little brother (4 at the time) learnt to ride on a 36year old 14.1hh pony

My daughter has been riding for 6 months, she just turned 5 (today !!) , and she rides a 12hh pony. To be fair, her little legs stick out to the sides like a Thelwell rider, but the pony is SO goodtempered and laid back that he tolerates all her bouncing ang giggling quite happily, and that, for me, is worth far far more than him being a couple of hands smaller.
