absorbant bedding for under deep litter straw

hello,

I prefer to deep litter my mare due to a leaky roof and a messy mare.
I think i can keep it down longer if i had something to absorb the worst of the wet. Would shavings be the best or would there be anything cheaper?

I use shavings under straw, but take the shavings out weekly, I only use half a bale of shavings a week, Bedmax were best as they are heavy and seem to stay put under the straw. Deep straw bed on top, take obvious wet out and all poo daily and top up.

When I take the shavings out ant the wekend I leave all the bed up to dry - works brilliantly for us

or would pellets much more absorbent and yo uwouldn't need to water then just put them straight down!!!
