Sioned is only 2 1/2 and has been bitted and seems very comfortable
in a french link.

However, I have a couple of western bridles for her, I am aware I could
keep her with the French Link with them but was wondering what
would be a suitable 1st western bit if I decided to go down that route.

Pics would be great if you have any;)

A good first Western bit is a basic snaffle bit. Until your horse has good lateral flexion and has learned to give to the bit and has learned the basics of yielding to neck rein pressure, you'll want to stick with your preferred snaffle option.

Once you're looking to move more to riding one-handed and bringing in vertical flexion, you may want to start to consider a shank bit. A Billy Allen is a useful bit - this is a similar bit: http://www.westernscene-uk.com/Store/professionals-choice-105-1286-0.html - but whatever you try, you'll want to start with a pretty short shank (the greater the shank length, the greater the leverage); once you're ready to introduce a ported bit you'll want to ensure the port is low and ideally that it's not a fixed bit, ie that the shanks have some movement side to side independent of the mouthpiece, and that you can operate one side of the bit independently of the other - Myler/Toklat may be useful to look at for their range? Sorry I don't have any pics to hand. But poll pressure and vertical flexion only become part of the mix once the horse has got the basics.

Thank you so much that really is useful information.

As I said she is only just 2 1/2 hopefully be backed next year so probably
have a little way to go before changing to a western bit. However, you
have given me some great info as to WHAT to look for. Thank you again xx
