We have seen the vet far more than I intended this year already, and it is only February 13th!

Some of you may remember that Ben had colic on New Years Day (typically in the middle of the night). I then asked my vet to come and check his teeth the following week. He found a hole in a tooth and referred him to the specialist dentist. We were there yesterday and Ben had 2 root canal fillings on either side of his mouth. The dentist said that his teeth were not sharp but were slanted as he favours eating on one side. The x-ray showed a suspicious shadow above his sinus and was interested to know if he frequently had a snotty nose, which he doesn't. This shadow could be something or nothing. If it is causing him pain or pressure it may account for the slanted teeth and the way he prefers to eat on one side. So the plan is to bring him back in 6 months to do the x-rays again, monitor any changes in this shadow and see if his teeth have become more slanted in that time. He also has pretty bad gum disease in his whole mouth. His could be a sign of cushings disease so he is being tested for that in a couple of weeks (they couldn't do it yesterday due to the sedation). In the meantime they have ordered a mouth wash for me to rinse his mouth out every day. That will be interesting as I know he won't like it!

My over riding thought in all this is that I am extremely grateful that I didn't cancel my insurance! I may well have multiple claims to put through as there are a number of conditions which could result from this but thankfully all his exclusions are due to arthritis, stifle and back conditions, so I can't see a reason for any rejections. I have mixed feelings about it all, he is still happy and I can still continue to exercise him in walk and trot (his trot work is coming on so well). But at the same time I think how much more can he take? I'm trying to not be worried about the shadow but it's hard to not let my imagination run away with me as I automatically think it is a growth of some kind.

It can feel like a never ending torrent of issues can’t it, but horses don’t perceive time and problems the way we do and he won’t be doing what ifs over the shadow so try to see it from his perspective, he’s probably just really relieved those teeth feel so much better than they did!
It’s really good to hear his trot work is coming along well, where are you up to with that now?

Trot work is building up slowly but surely, although with the recent weather we have only been able to walk for the last couple of weeks as everywhere is frozen. He feels great when he moves forward and is very willing. I can’t wait till the fields dry up and we can so some longer trots. I haven’t ruled out the odd canter either. We have been doing some very basic pole work as well which seems to be helping. He doesn’t feel obviously lame at all in the trot. I’m going to book the physio to come and see him soon so it will be interesting to see if she finds the trot has helped or hindered his back.

Good luck with the mouthwash, Buddy hates it, he has a gap in his teeth and they aren't perfect but he eats fine and isn't quidding.

The insurance should cover you are they can't blame dental issues on his lameness....if they try to argue. I have kept Bud's insurance on as his premium is less than his nutraquin and danilon!

It all seems a lot but as long as he has quality of life, and he really seems to have that at the moment, you should just plug on, plug the gaps as you can, improve what you can. I hope it isn't a tumour, if it is then it may make your decisions clearer but until then try not to think about it.

Just over a month ago, we were going to have Aimee pts - she is militant now, knocked me over this morning as she wanted out! Been rampantly in season - age 33 - and encouraging Murphy to do the decent thing! She is eating well, walking around pretty well, hackney action behind, her walk is dreadful but it gets her from A to B, and yesterday she was standing on the yard under the canopy, where the sun was shining, dozing. So I am glad we didn't kill her.....It will come but that was not the day. And that's the best anyone can do. Give them a chance and see.

Yes they are giving me a large syringe. I haven’t got it yet as they didn’t have it in stock, but it will arrive next week. I know Ben will hate it but I will do my best.
Good luck, he might surprise you? I know Storm wouldn't like it, but I bet Zi or Chloe would be okay if we took our time with them and got them used to it.
