2025 - My Shetland Blog

One of my Icelandic horses ran away today, but she came home when she realised she was on her own!

Weather vile. Ponies and sheep all inside. Icelandic horses prefer to stay outside. Dog refused to go on a walk!

A slight lull in Storm Eowyn this morning and I managed to get out to the Icelandic horses to give them their breakfast buckets. I spent the rest of the morning taking photos of the cat!

Storm Eowyn has passed and everyone is alright and happy to be outside again. All except the old Shetland ladies who enjoyed their 24/7 waitress service. The Shetland boys trashed the place.

To the vet with Tiddles and Waffle, Shetland ponies, to have blood taken for tests. I thought it might be a tad cheaper for us to go to them.

I hope you can get a good treatment plan in place and it works. EMS seems to be something that's looked into more nowadays and treatment options are increasing, so fingers crossed for you.

Took White Panther to the vet (aka Monster) as he's going off food which is a huge worry and not like him.

Horrible weather here in Shetland today so everyone fed what they need to get through it.

Sitting in a field, minding my own business when I am ambushed by a small Patterdale terrier.

When I thought I was doing everything right only to find that it was all utterly wrong. I feel very disappointed in myself, mostly. I should've known better.

I found alfalfa was a huge no for Little Un, even the tiny amount in a couple of treats would bring up digital pulses and make him footy. It's in so many things, and because it's low sugar it's popular in laminitis friendly feeds so you have to get obsessive about reading labels I'm afraid. And while I'm sure I don't need to tell you I'll put it here in case it's news for someone else - lucerne is another name for alfalfa.

The good news is there are some low calorie low sugar chaffs out there that they enjoy, Little Un was very fond of Honeychop Lite and Healthy https://www.honeychop.com/product/honeychop-lite-healthy/ and Luka is currently liking Mollichaff Daily Fibre which while not as good for your needs still isn't bad https://www.horsehage.co.uk/horse-f...ollichaff-chaffs-range/mollichaff-dailyfibre/ . I don't know how easy it would be for you to get either of them over there though.

To town to buy a tonne of builders' sand and bring it home to distribute in the ponies' stalls.

Knackered now.

A bad day if you are cat awaiting a dental procedure.

A good day if you are an ancient Shetland pony who needs to eat.

I learn how to relax - mini bricks!

Went to see Gussie and Dahlia, my latest two rescue sheep as they were sulking after being wormed.
