2024 Hacking Thread

Then very sensible of you to walk away. Thank you for explaining
just very sad, it could have been sorted, I would have been willing to pay her livery where their other horse was if they had to move out of the field before all this could be done but never had that discussion. Someone was seeing her yesterday and anyway in the morning i put my back out which slightly effed everything up anyway!

The HM saddles aren't really that great in cold weather and take time to warm up as they are memory foam.
I don't want to derail the hacking thread talking about saddles, but we all know I love saddles 😂

I forgot to say we also had a super ride on Tuesday. It wasn't long, and just around our normal Heath, but he was more responsive and less careful of me than he has been. My leg held up well to trotting and we had a couple of nice little canters. And he was just lovely, because he is.

Just for example: we started off up the gully. Half way up, where the banks are higher than Sid's belly and I can get on him bareback and actually sit DOWN, there was a young tree down over the track. We rode up to the tree and stopped. I got off onto the bank (up), dropped Sid's reins and hauled the tree out of the way. He gave it a helpful nudge with his nose (horses are so strong) and stood perfectly still until I had put it on the bank and slid back on to him. The moment he felt my bum securely in the saddle, he set off again up the track. I didn't give him any instructions at all!

Well i did get to ride this weekend but can't say I enjoyed it. I was told by my trainer that his friend had heard that the major supplier of hunt and common riding hirelings had a horse for sale that might suit me. I had contacted her months ago but nothing but when I rang her yes she had and yes I could come and see it. She would book me in for the 1300 ride at walk trot. So trotted off there. Nice horse born there been institutionalised since started work age 4 and in hard work in summer then she sends them off on a winter livery so she doesn't pay for them. So went out on a group ride - my nightmare - one other rider who they hadn't seen ride as well as me -and the leaders on two new horses to see how they got on - not well, they kept planting and spooking. Straight out onto the road horse slipping all over the place as he needed new shoes - all them were slipping apart from the new ones. I rode him in the crown of the lane where there was a bit more grip..... Out 1 1/2 hours and lots of very fast trotting on the road and on an off road track which was like concrete. Horse on complete auto pilot if the ones in front trot off he rushes off int a fast trot without an aid and no contact/connection with his mouth, just followed the herd. Hated it. Did a bit of schooling with him, asked him to halt, let the others walk on, then walk on to join them to try to find out about him. When he went in front of the ride as the leaders were messing around, he was nicer ears forward sweet but his trot is full on or nothing - I trot slowly. They have been trained to go like common riding horses as Brian said he wouldn't know what you were asking. When you scratch and show him affection no reaction, just blank. Vendor is terrifying, all the horses very quiet, very lights off. I did ask how he liked to be ridden and got a blank, oh he just does what you want. Er no, he just goes with the herd and you are superfluous. Got ticked off for trying to 'ride' him ie. get him to relax and give you a contact. Running martingale didn't help. I wouldn't go back solo vendor would eat me for breakfast. I rode a lovely little cob mare two weeks ago, she was beautiful, went on a squeeze, changed pace, halted, very obedient but very sweet, lights on. One good thing is that amazingly i am not stiff and sore today, i expected to be hobbling. We managed to find out a bit more about the horse, been lame, has colicked which is probably why he is being let go. Sham e as he could be nice but couldn't begin to deal with the vendor.

Goodness - I'm a bit behind with updates

In the last 2 weeks I've ridden Harvey 8 times and now we are up to 28 minutes in walk. This week I can introduce some trot - Yay!

Also everyone at the yard clubbed together to buy me a voucher for the local hacking centre so on Friday I had a nice 2 hour hack there.

Russian roulette grey horse style - clean your horse (ish) and turn him out without a rug :) :)

I popped out with mine. I was going to lunge but change of plan based on her grumps.
She wants to do the same route as last time so that's fine with me.
She's still looking like she's holding on to the season for dear life!!

Had a lovely walk out with the cob. It was a strange one as I was in my shorts and I felt too HOT.
The improvement to the ditch crossing is holding up well, the stream did mean I needed to do a slight hop, she just walked through the water. The sandy spot is really slippery when wet and she tends to balk about going through it when ridden.

She glanced at people having a riding lesson.
I think we went past the stallion/colt, something came over to the fence and strutted itself alongside us anyway! She did the blowing bubbles underwater sounds. Then two coaches came past. The second one stopped to tell us two more were behind him. I decided to turn off as we were right by the junction and we then had mares and foals in the next field watching us.
So all in all, a calm quiet walk out.

Amazing how a 5 mins walk cheers you up. He does get disappointed when we turn round to come back tho. Saturday it's up to 10 mins 😃

Okay I am going to have a whinge. If you don't want to read that, just scroll on to the pretty pictures I got. 😂

I have spent fourteen months getting the cob's hoof right. I did all the inhand walking, the increase if she's comfy. I did the riding if she's comfy, then increase it if she's comfy.
Had the farrier or the vet said that's the best we can hope for, I would be fine with that. I was actually expecting that to be the case and that she might not trot sound again or be okay with my weight.

I will be honest and say her subsequent seasonal issues are beginning to grate me as she's likely going to need most of next week off. I rode today but she's at the yawning stage so I just turned round as she's half asleep. (we've actually got the physio Saturday. I tried to avoid her being in season as she won't trot up sound)
I stand no chance of getting her fit to do very much if I only have a two week window to do it in. I will read this again in a few days and kick myself up the backside.

The bottom left photo suggests I need some new jods 😂
Retail shopping could be the solution.

Yes new jodhs might cheer you up.

Just replaced them with the exactly the same style, but in a different colour. I don't own jeans, but I do love these riding tights.

I don't have all my ducks in a row at the moment.

I took her out inhand, just round the block.
I managed to attach the cheekpiece to the throatlash and the noseband to the checkpiece. It's fair to say that the noseband didn't really sit right for some reason so it's not a design that will catch on.
It's days like this It's not really surprising that she bites!
