2024 Hacking Thread

There are also a couple of black ones. Robin had no clue why we were standing still admiring them!

The vet has been to rescan Harvey and his check ligament is massively improved so she says I can.......

I can hack for 10 minutes a day in walk increasing by 5 minutes a week and then a rescan in 6 weeks

40 - 50 minutes - just a dream for me ATM 🤣

Being a good boy to be scanned (we checked it was ok to take a photo)

That's fab news. I've fallen in love with Harvey from that photo with the vet. What a star 😍

I am wary of hacking in the woods or meadows with no actual track as her foot could be caught in a hole. We have rabbit holes. There is a George Elliot novel, may be Mill on the Floss where Maggie is told off for trotting over a meadow. George Eliot's father was a land agent with whom she would sometimes ride out on his inspections and I always picture him ticking her off for risking her pony by trotting on the meadow. And her remembering that and putting it into her novel.

First hack after five weeks off, I hope we can carry on from here. 😁
Farrier next week and I am ready for him with six boots, It's a bit like Cinderella and the slipper, it fits, it fits!!! 👢

Popped the Autumn saddle on, back to the Sprengers, super. Off she went.
She's going to be clipped. I think that's why she's a bit of a grump with the girth. She hates being too hot.

Slightly different hack today, back stepping with my friend. She owned the wheeler 5 years ago and he’s come back for a bit due to owner injuring her shoulder soaking hay! First time tandem in 5 years and they were great 👌 we went up the road to a big field and had a play around some cones 🤩

I managed to longrein today. She did threaten to bite with the girth and I stopped and distracted her with a brush and fuss. When I did do the girth up she squealed which she only ever does if feeling fresh and fruity. She's on 12ml of reg!

I think that's long grass and a long tail.

I used to love backstepping and the occasional drive when my friend drove. One is plenty for me though I can't even begin to think about tandem! I have an internet friend who has a team of 4 shetties (aka the flying hamsters :))

I hacked today, having managed to mount and dismount. With breeches barely held together round my bulging waist. OH and I both have birthdays and birthday meals in September and have done far less walkng. So after much thought I have ordered myself new breeches in a larger size .
OH took a pic of us which I told him was unecessary but he said it was important as it was our first outing since I turned 85. I wil try and upload it later but am currently struggling with the GP who accuse OH of having missed an appointment this morning - which he would never have made since he drives me to the yard.

Rehab continues - we are up to 20 minutes hacking in walk now.
I had a phone call from YO yesterday though to say Harvey's halo has slipped. He has a paddock split in 2 by a temporary fence. He decided it would be fun to gallop end to end jumping the fence on the way twice, despite that fact the gate was open between the two :rolleyes:

Treating him to a hand graze on the track

I'm claying his legs after each ride - its looks a bit odd as it dries off

We had a lovely hack this morning, out with my friend Uta and her horse Fin. They always do the same hack on a Sunday and Sid knows the route so it's very relaxing for us both.

We did quite a lot of trotting and it's pretty much back to normal for me now. And a couple of sprightly canters - he does so appreciate being clipped!

Well i did actually get to ride a little cob yesterday, sweet little lady, but unfortunately unable to buy her despite offering full asking price etc. Had to walk away, she was sweet, really liked her. Bloody uncomfortable saddle though, for the first time ever felt huge pull on thighs, it was a Heather Moffat one and made her feel very wide which she wasn't.

Not sure that I understand. Why wasnt your offer of the full price accepted?
But I am replying because I too found a Heather Moffet impossible to ride in.

But I have ridden easily in most ancient RS saddles - old style GPs. Though Ella has a more modern one I believe with a higher cantle. It is a Fieldhouse says OH and they dont look expensive on line.

they didn't want to wait for a vetting and i wasn't prepared to buy without a vetting due to issues i saw and just wanted a vet to tell me if they were ok to proceed. Also I would have wanted to insure the horse for full vets fees in case of a colic on arrival, as a precaution, and if they wanted the horse gone immediately then this was also impossible. Also to arrange transport given they can only do weekends as they worked weekdays that might have been hard to organise unless they wanted to deliver her themselves. I would have used our usual transporter Gillies and would have by now had a date for a vetting and a collection etc so got it all done fast as possible. They do a north south run weekly so would have waited for them to tell me when and whether this was convenient.

The HM saddle was very padded so made the horse feel very wide I compared it with mine and the padding was at least double so i reckoned mine with a gullet change would have been closer contact and not made her feel so wide - she felt wider than Buddy and Sapphire in that saddle.
