Coronavirus

Can't believe they are planning to let a few houses form a bubble for a whole week over Christmas ? Christmas Eve is one of the busiest days at my work out of the whole year. So all those people mingling potentially catching it. Then going to spend a week with their elderly relatives and another household. Lockdown 3.0 in January then! If it's legal I can't exactly say no very easily to visiting my boyfriend's family. I'd already planned not to see mine, they are caring for my grandma and mum is vunerable. I've seen them approx twice since Feb just from outside and at a distance but it's fine as I know I'm doing so to protect them.
That's really sensible of you not seeing your parents - wish everyone was thinking along those lines. I would just be honest with your boyfriend and say you aren't comfortable with visiting his family, you can always say it's down to having vulnerable parents / grandparents yourself and if you "had" to go visit yours then you don't want to carry extra risk to them.

I’m not planning to see my family for Xmas, so instead I’ve offered to take the boys to visit a couple of families who have fallen on hard times through this as a Xmas present of a little pony party. I’ve asked the local church if they can put me in touch with suitable families.
Golly that is so kind of you. I'm sure you'll make someone very happy with the boys!!!

I believe, wrongly or rightly, that they're doing it as a popularity thing @Ale - they don't want to be the government that cancelled Christmas. It's utter madness though, and like you I think it will bring about a massive lockdown in January, though that won't save the people already infected as a result of such idiocy. I don't want to go and have dinner with my parents when the cost is possibly their lives! The majority of people in this country don't celebrate Christmas for it's religious meaning, so why not move it back to, say, May when hopefully a vaccine will be having some impact and also people can gather outside more?
Totally agree about most people not celebrating due to religious aspect of Christmas. I can't actually name any people other than one of my sisters who attends church. (Doesn't mean the rest of us are godless but we don't normally visit a church).

When the HOLY ROLLERS come to the door it really annoys me.
I always tell them I KNOW WHAT A CHURCH LOOKS LIKE.

So true Trewsers just because we don't go to church doesn't make us GODLESS.
Lol yes the Holy Rollers! We get those even up here and they climb two locked gates and traverse a muddy yard. They came not so long ago to tell me they'd been having a talk about Jesus. I said "oh that's nice then isn't it" and walked off.

My son's in bits - his strongman friend and mentor died yesterday from covid. He probably had a lot of underlying problems - a very big lad, who put his body under a lot of pressure, but he was only 31, and such a good bloke. He supported my son at all his comps. Such a shock.

I think there's still the feeling among a lot of people that if you aren't in an at risk group it's no worse than flu - the forget that bad flu strains can have big death tolls. It annoys and scares me how many people are still not seeing how dangerous it is to everyone.

@Huggy I'm so sorry to hear about your son's friend. I hope your son says safe and keeps his memory alive xx

Yes Huggy .I'm sorry to read this too.
That must have been awful for your son.

There is still no sign of people smartening up to behave sadly.

Its so annoying to see all the news reports
from crowded packed airports.
Then they INTERVIEW the morons.
"I WANT TO GO VISIT.. AND I'M GOING"

It's sad what society is becoming.

Hmphh - you should have seen Southend on Sea seafront on Sunday - it was absolutely packed - no parking spaces left and the pavements crowded with people and no masks - sadly we are a favourite destination for east Londoners and are invaded every sunny weekend ...

Only know this because I use the seafront road to get to my 95 year old mum who is housebound to deliver food etc.

to stop some of the insanity.
They are flocking to the airports like
Cockroaches.

Pandemic

What do we think about the relaxing of rules for Christmas?

I think it's utter madness and cases are going to rocket up. People will be moving between tiers, meeting indoors, staying over and mixing in the worst possible way for virus transmission. Then for the sake of a few days infections and deaths will soar and we'll all be in a hard lockdown for weeks again. Why not just bite the bullet and say Christmas will be with your household this year and then maybe extend one of the spring or summer Bank Holidays by a day for a delayed Christmas? By then the weather would be better so gatherings could be outdoors, and hopefully a vaccine would have been widely rolled out too. It would also make it easier for people who aren't happy having relatives etc visiting due to the dangers but don't want to offend by saying no.

I think it's madness too. I totally understand that a lot of people are not as reclusive as me, and love being around family and friends. But that's just not possible or rather it shouldn't be right now. It will pass - but not if everyone just thinks because it's Christmas it's gone away! And yes, people who worry about offending relatives wouldn't be put on the spot either. I feel so dam sorry for the hospital staff really. They must despair.

I think it’s a waste, why have a free for all over Christmas only to end up with another ‘lock down’ at the end of January, listening to fellow liveries this morning chatting about it, oh we’re doing the same as usual, sod the rule, I’m sick of not being able to meet friends for a drink, blah, blah, one asked me who I’d be getting together with, my answer, no one, all of my close family have already said they won’t be visiting, not because they don’t love me or want to see me, but because they do.

I think the bit in bold sums it up perfectly.

Why do some people think it's them vs the government? Almost like the government and the rules should be broken / or found a loophole in. Don't they get that the rules are there for a reason? And that the advice is there for a reason? I couldn't entertain the thoughts of getting near anyone just because it's Christmas. It's actually very dumb to think like that - that because it's Christmas it's okay. I give up I really do!

I don't actually think it will make any difference to people's behaviour - those who are sensible will not visit / have parties, those who are selfish will do what they want anyway, rules or no rules.

Apart from which not everyone in the UK celebrates Christmas - what about the other religious festivals and Hogmanay?

I wish the Government had bit the bullet back in March and had shut everything down, including international transport until the virus was under control.

Dreading it, I'm either forced to go see my boyfriend's family or we will probably row and I'll be seen as the bad guy for not wanting to risk his families life. Feel like they won't take no for an answer, not even willing to discuss it at the moment.

I'd love to just go for a nice quiet hack. Not seeing my family at all, mum's at risk and caring for my grandma too. My brother who lives with them hasn't been out since Feb apart from to exercise. Why after all his sacrafice (if you can call it that but you know what I mean) should I be allowed to go in and expose them to high risk. Makes no sense.

Won't see my nan either, she's in a bubble with one of her daughters so at least she won't be alone. They don't go out much as are retired so feels safer
