2020 Hacking & Riding Thread

Did a bit with Zi this morning in hand. He spooked at the usual corner - OH said "glad I wasn't on board just then". In his defence it could have been a few things that caused it. He settled back down fast enough - though I can't decide if I prefer his fast paced walk and pricked ears to the "oh go on I will if you make me" walk we normally get! He did some nice backing up too.

Bit of a downer this weekend - TBH I'm a bit fed up of helping everyone else and not doing enough for myself

Friday was a trip to the tack shop to get bedding. YO normally fetches it in her lorry but she has sold hers and not got the new one yet so we took mine. With various traffic jams and delays that took 2 hours. It saves about £70 per trip compared with getting it locally - but no benefit to me as I provide my own. After that the mechanic came to sort out the indicators on the lorry (long and boring story which I won't bore you with) and after that was done it was gone 3 o'clock getting drsk and drizzling. I did ride but only fior about 15 minutes in the school

Saturday was a nicer day, so I managed a hack with weekend groom. I fell a but guilty if I don't take her as she isn't allowed to go out on her own... Also my foster horse had managed to rip his (nearly new) rug in two places on the neck.

On Sunday first order of business was rug patching - he only has one rug so I couldn't take it away to do properly. I couldn't find the proper patches for the rug, but I had one from Harvey's. The only glue I could find was and old tube for tents and then the scissors I had were blunt. I wanted a round patch so the corners didn't lift but had to settle for a square one with the corners hacked off. It made a right mess and the glue wasn't dry by the time I had to leave and put the rug back on - I just hope it will last a week or 2 until he can wear his heavier rug.
In the afternoon I decided it was about time I got back to jumping 100cm at home so took Harvey into the school to play. Sadly he just didn't seem to want to play - I couldn't get a decent canter out of him so after a few jumos at 80cm I gave up in case he was feeling a bit off. All in all a disappiontng weekend and no photos either :(

Aw sorry it wasn't a great weekend for you riding. That's a shame you were busy doing things and nothing for yourself too - sometimes it's just like that though isn't it? I hope the rug is okay, sounds like a good patching job to me! In fact, I was wondering about mending one of Zi's rugs - so you've inspired me as I've got a spare patch that came with it. I wonder if Harvey kind of sensed with the jumping that maybe you were feeling a bit like you had to jump and get something done after all the mugging about you'd done the day before? Just a thought, they are more in tune and able to read us than we give them credit for. On our old yard Storm would be really off if I had rushed into the school and been on a mission rushing tacking up etc. I then used to wonder why but on reflection I think she could just sense that I was out of sorts. Not saying this is the case for you - just a thought.

Took Hogan out this morning - first time in nearly a week. He was very good, and I worked him harder than usual. I've been letting him away with being lazy, so lots of trotting, and proper walking. Funny thing though, he's spooked a couple of times recently, and he doesn't spook like other horses. Ramsey always did a bums rush, ran a few paces, then turned to look. In other words a defensive spook. Hogan whips round, kicks out, and does a little rear, facing the "threat". Very much on the offensive! He's also broken the barn. He's completely dislodged the partition pole - it's only held up by the partition itself - came away from the roof, and the floor. It's the wall he runs along when he's wet. My embarrassing boy.?

Oh Hogan!

Well another super duper ride for OH on Zi. They went around the fields and back up onto the yard. Zi was fabulous, such a good boy indeed. I think for the time being they may well be better riding in the field. School is great under hoof and never floods but, I feel the shadows and shapes made by the sun being low in the sky this time of year doesn't always help. And I wondered if it provoked spooking. They did so nicely today - I was dead pleased for them both. Lol Rosy Rue was about to wreak havoc in the school too! Naughty kitty she always follows them in there - she had been perched on a bush branch but when she saw them approaching she hopped down and was about to lie in wait in one of the bankings  ??

Another nice ride. Crossing everything that Screenshot_20201127-133102_Gallery.jpgScreenshot_20201127-133111_Gallery.jpgHogan's back to normal. Went out of our comfort zone, and he was great - slow, but great. In the first pic, if you look in the distance, there's a track - used to be Ramseys favourite hack. Sigh. Not sure if Hogan and I will ever get that far! The second pic looks like a lovely route - but sadly it's feet deep mud in winter, and too gutted in summer.

Well a super ride for OH on Zi yesterday (and I have pics to add later). They are going slow and steady - but nothing wrong with that! Instead of sticking in the school they venture down the field again. The weather is wonderful up here right now. We are making the most of it.

And another ride today! Goodness this is a world record ahahahahhahaha. Zi and OH went a little further today, I couldn't keep up, my legs are not made for walking fast hehehehe. They looked happy together and Zi was such a good boy. I think he's doing just grand considering he's had so much time off. But I maintain the in hand work really did help. I have pics too - will hopefully get them off my phone later.
