I would say she was a very dark bay. The mealy nose is a giveaway for me. All the colour variations are probably because of your strong sunlight as well as the different qualities of summer and winter coats.

But there are folk on here who know more than me!

Bay. Some go a very different colour in their winter coat - Little Un was almost black if he wasn't clipped in the winter, but in the summer he was a proper mahogany bay with strong dapples.

I'd say Bay too. Joe was dark bay in winter and looking back on photos looked almost black and went quite a bit lighter in the summer.

Thanks everyone, I absolutely love watching her coat change:) can’t wait for her to shed out this summer. I don’t think I’ll rug her, she didn’t really need it last year, I’ll just use fly spray

I wonder if Little Un would have been classed as seal brown then @Bodshi ? Mahogany bay in summer and nearly black in winter but under his tummy, elbows and inner thighs were a very pale cream all year. Clip him out and it looked like two different horses had been done.

I don't know @carthorse. I wish Chev was still on here to help us out. I think you'd need a genetic test to be sure. It is my favourite colour though.

Sadly too late for that now, and calling him a different colour wouldn't have altered the super lad he was.

DNA testing is useless at identifying breed. The only way it's any help is if you want to confirm parentage and have DNA from both likely parents. People have, for fun generally, sent away DNA from purebred horses with known parentage only to have the test come back saying a completely different breed or combination of breeds. Save your money, it won't make any difference to who your horse is, it won't allow you to register her and it won't allow any stock you breed from her to be registered.

I have just accepted that any horse I have, will not be the colour it was when I bought it. One looks as though I bleached him, the other looks as though I dyed him black.View attachment 108114View attachment 108115
Haha, I think greys are the most disappointing - you start with a gorgeous dappled rocking horse look alike and end up with something that's usually a mucky brown with smelly green patches 😝
