Buddy not picking up

Still not got his hinds on today, so waiting till farrier comes this week and see if we can figure out if he is hurting or if he is being awkward. He lifts his fronts which is where he has arthritis, but it is the hinds that are the issue, but i suppose that would put more weight on the fronts. He needs his boots on to be ridden so he knows he is going out. Usually when he has them taken off, he lifts his foot no bother.....hard to read.

He has been out hacking today, 50 minutes, we have a hunt ride next weekend but as the ground is rock hard suspect we will not go.

Otherwise he has regained his weight and is feeling good.

Buddy has been off since then as i did my back in and have been unable to ride. It's getting better and I weighed him today, he has gone back up to 546kg which is above his 538 usual weight, and the ribs are well covered again. Just moved them onto the winter field as the summer field is so wet and trashed due to recent rain. He can go out or come in as he wants. May have to reconsider Suze's regime as she has ballooned....all the others are ok.

I watched him last night, he came in for supper at 6pm, wolfed it down, then Fleur and Suze went back up the winter field, he followed and chased her right up the hill at full gallop, really giving it welly going up the hill. Thrilled to see him so happy and full of himself. Did some massive bucks and charging around. They must be out most of the time, last two mornings my total mucking out has been 3 skips yesterday and 2 skips today, usually at least 9 of them.

Buddy has pretty much have the winter off, due to the awful weather and road conditions. He is back in work, up to 1 hour 10 so far, hacking out including gentle hills. His weight is the same it always is at 538kg and you can just see a rib. Lost a bit of muscle but hopefully will get that back now with more work. He feels fine, takes a little while to warm up but today he met the string of racehorses, had to go past a yard where horses were working in a sand school, and got passed by a huge lorry. He came home full of himself so really pleased with him. He's getting a lot of veteran vitality and just hoping we don't have a repeat of the virus he had last year when he went from being fine to really poorly in April.

We were just about to do stuff today when we heard dreadful screams from the field and saw a poor deer being savaged by a dog. An hour later, we finally got out riding with Buddy, just been and found the deer again, trying to get someone to come out and help me with her. She's not able to jump

Oh golly that's awful. Poor deer - do you know who the dog belongs to? Was it just out on it's own loose?

Buddy had his saddle refitted and flocked last night as he has lost a bit of muscle due to being off all winter. He is back to using his half sheepskin numnah and rode him this morning and felt better, i am in a better position as back of saddle lifted a bit now, and he was moving more smoothly, using his back more.

Yesterday morning he did a brisk 1 hour walk, the first 20 minutes he was dozy but he did some really good work for 30 minutes. Worked on getting a better walk, bringing his back up, and marching, so he was out of puff for once as he did walk smartly without a break. Gone up the field for a siesta.

Today he did 45 minutes which included some hills so he worked hard, not out of puff, bit sweaty. Looking at the pictures from last year, he has lost so much top line, you can see a rib and his hips are more pronounced, he is aging. He has a bit of tummy but his neck is thinner, and he just looks a bit weaker. Hurts.

Just what OH was saying about himself after a year at home.

It's very hard to see them changing for the worse over time. Broke my heart watching Ramsey age, but I comforted myself that it was a natural process, and he was happy and content until his last year.

For the time of year he looks pretty good, I think. He's well covered, his coat is glossy and his bum is a good shape. He looks a bit hollow in the flanks but not much for an old boy at this time of year.

As for being flat, well, everyone has an off day sometimes?

Hope so it is the hollow flanks that concern me and his lack of energy. Wonder if i get some straight oats to give him some zip. Having said that nearly fell off the old bugger yesterday when he did a seriously dirty spook.

Mattie's flanks are much hollower than that at the moment, it worries me too. I'm feeding him Allen & Paige conditioning mix on top of his usual Veteran Vitality and Agrobs Senior Mash, it is really rich and he's beginning to look a bit better

OK might add that. I use their L Mix for the others as a token food and give him some of it, but he gets 95% the Veteran Vitality which he wolfs down. He is getting a full scoop of that twice a day, plus balancer, and a bit of the L Mix. He is the only one, apart from Aimee, who gets any hard feed, the others just get the balancer with their minerals and forage.
