Buddy not picking up

Had another conversation with vet today as he is still very ribby and just not right.

We have upped his food, added oil, he is being rested, we will have another chat next week and if he hasn't improved or deteriorates between now and then, will come and do a complete blood and work up to see if we can find any answers.

Worried sick.

A friend is having exactly the same problem with her oldie at the moment, she's suddenly dropped off despite extra feed. The vet took bloods yesterday in the hope of finding some answers.

Oh no, that's not what anyone wanted to hear. Virtual hugs, and hoping a bit of rest and extra food does the job.

Belle’s not gaining weight yet either, she’s thinner than I’ve ever known her at 404 kg! She’s proper sparky though, full of beans and full of attitude. I’m hoping with her it’s just there’s not much grass yet.
Fingers crossed and get some Chubb on you vibes for Buddy x

The weather has had me a bit fooled, I had to keep reminding myself it was only march, now just mid April, I felt like they should have been picking up more. Indie is still ribby, the other 3 have turned a corner in the last week but they are porkers at the best of times. I'm expecting the first proper flush of grass when we get some rain (we've had nothing to speak of in a month).

what concerns me is he was looking fine all over winter and now just dropped it, he got an hour on good grass yesterday but obviously concerned about not giving him too much in case of colic - he's never had laminitis but Molly got twisted gut in springtime and losing Leo in 2019 still haunts me, i.e. happy no concerns that night dead next day. I have gone and got him more feed yesterday so keep him well stocked. He doesn't finish the hay on the yard overnight, so he is eating what he wants, and has been eating straw for more roughage, they are getting through a small bale overnight of straw between 4 donkeys and 2 horses plus ad lib hay. He is getting 3 times a day veteran vitality lite, l mix and cushcare, plus his Lite Balancer and oil and his supplements. Suze is light as well, but in her case she is looking perfect, and again she isn't hungry.

Not specific ones, hence why they took bloods to see if that shows anything. I wonder if the drastic swing in weather was just more than the oldies could cope with? If I do hear anything and it may be relevant then I'll let you know.

Vet also thinks it could be pain from his ringbone given the ground is now firm

Mattie has been the same. He looked fine at the end of February and now he is ribby and poor. He always finds the spring coat change a struggle but it seems particularly hard this year, and we've had hardly any rain since the middle of March which means the grass is slow. But also he is just getting old.... It's worrying. I hope you manage to find a pick-me-up for him.

I went out to go and give him his lunch, he saw me coming out the kitchen door and by the time I got to the yard he was at the gate waiting, and when he had finished off he went, he's walking pretty sound.

Feels slightly less ribby this morning and his poo is now much greener as he has been put on the better grass. He is still the same cunning Buddy. He now knows he gets lunch. The moment he sees me step out of the kitchen door he heads down to the yard and stands at the gate to come in, beats me there every time.....
