Fine on Saturday, Sunday he was not his usual chippy self and a bit nappy going out - Monday he was quiet and producing a snoring sound every now and again, Tuesday quiet but not as noisy - we had ordered some respiration suppliment as we are surrounded by rapeseed and hay fields and the pollen is something cronic ( I know as I suffer with it)- had it yesterday morning and night and this morning he is much brighter , fine in walk on the lunge, took him up into trot but after a few strides started to weeze a bit and cough so brought him straight back into walk which he was fine, hes had the suppliment in his feed this morning after exercise so hopefully it will help him, we suspect either allergy (but no watering eyes or discharge) or a virus - all through this he has eaten normally, normal poo and drinking normally an vital signs normal , no sweating.

thinking back last week he was drinking more than usual and going at his salt lick something stupid but put it down to the humid weather (thats stopped now), think maybe now he was starting to come down with this so maybe a virus like we get, daughter had one last week which I started with on Sunday afternoon and just getting over - makes you wonder if co-incidence or we have all had the same thing. Tess was quiet for a couple of days but put that down to her coming into season.

Hopefully hes picking up now but suspect we are going to have to miss next weeks planned show as hes only on light walking now until we are sure hes okay.

I hope that he recovers soon. I have no words of wisdom as I have never dealt with a virus or allegy in horses, but I and sending healing vibes and hope that he feels better soon.

Well after definate improvement - saturday morning he was back to suare one - we had the vet out to him and good news is that temperature was normal and no lung problems - upper respitory tract is the problem and he thinks its an Allergy - possible tree pollen - quite a few having similar in area - so hes on a 10 day course of treatment - we can start working him again on Wednesday when drugs should have kicked in - we will see how he gets on and review with vet after 10 days.

This morning he is much his old self in temperament just a little weezy when grazing.

He was a shit for the vet for the stethascope - but putting the thermometer up his bum no problem much to the vets relief and amazement - they have history:giggle:

still weezy this morning bless him, hes into his third day now on the Ventipulmin - hes very quite just after he has been fed but then livens up , we had rain last night again and he seems to be worse after rain no idea why:unsure: Hes got a little bit of clear discharge now on the nose, glands still up under throat area but starting to go down marginally, no coughing at all and no heaving - hes not pooing as much as normal but what he is are normal and everything else is as it should be, we can't start exercise with him until wednesday - although hes out 24/7 as per vets instructions - its the first year he has been up at this field as last summer he was up at the yard due to his abcessing and lami - will see how he gets on he might have to go up there for a break if it don't improve to see if that helps. If it is allergy then its obviously something up there thats seasonal - as he was in field further up the road a couple of years ago no problem, hate seeing him not himself, miss being chased round the field when I am trying to poo pick:(

Also, allergies can often get worse year on year - repeated exposure can both increase and decrease tolerance of the irritant - hence swet itch can often get worse year on year. Have you tried a nose net on a headcollar or mask?

Not yet PFB but something we are thinking about, will see how he goes, this morning he is much back to his normal self, the weeze is hardly noticeable and he back to seeing me much as a plaything!

Glad he is feeling better.

One of mine gets a similar thing, hers is seasonal and its usually rape that causes it.

Some years she has had a course of Ventapulmin which has worked wonders.

Other years she is ok depending on whats growing in the fields.

We moved this year and touch wood, she hasn't had it at all. She is 18 years old now and does not seem to be suffering any long term ill effects:smile:

I mentioned the rape seed to the Vet, but as they are on the hill field and it is mainly grazing around their turnout hes leaning morning towards Tree Pollen, we have woods and trees in abundance and late flowering hedges as well - the rapeseed fields are surrouding the otherside of the village but I know it used to affect my daughter when she used to ride through it - hoping just the one course will do it at the price it is, if he needs another he will get it but if vet agrees would rather put him back onto a more natural suppliment to aid him moving forwards until the pollen is finished.

Our Tess is 23 now and was diagnosed with COPD years ago, we put her out 24/7 and hardly has any problems at all - odd cough in high summer when dusty on the ground, we would not have been suprised if it had been her that had the issue.

horses eh!

Well the Meds appear to have done the trick, he came cantering over for his Tea last night and was full of it this morning, pouring down with rain, so restart of his exercise put back to tomorrow morning, that will give us a test on his walk out. Just the expensive Vet Bill to pay now - never have a penny in your pocket with horses - we are covered for Vet Bills but if its just the one treatment and callout then not sure its worth claiming this time with the excess, will see what Vet says on Friday when we report back, if he does think we need to have a second course then we will put a claim in, will still cover us for the pollen period next year so if re-occurs we will be able to get some more in before that 12 month claim period is up, would rather look at getting something herbal - the NAF suppliment we got did seem to work initially, think if we had got it in at the start we might not have needed the Vet meds - something else to manage!

All very similar to our new pony who arrived on Sat by the afternoon he had a cough and then sunday he was wheezy and heaving!!! He is now settling but still has the odd cough and he is still heaving but not as much. If the ventapulmin has worked a treat for you then i will get the vet out and hope its the same as your pony!!!! Fingers crossed as he is the loveliest most trustworthy pony I know you could put a baby on him and he would look after them!!! He has no temp and still has a hooly around the field!!

its day 7 on the meds today and this morning we trotted him up to see if there was any reaction - nothing - no weezing .snorting or coughing - we will ring thevets on Monday with an update but if still the same will see what he thinks about putting him back on the Naf suppliment for a couple of weeks - the hay has just been cut in next field and will be baled next week - grass pollen reduced then - blossom on trees and hedges is about gone - so if that is the trigger thenwithin a couple of weeks hopefully he should be okay.

a little update from us, the weezing has stopped, he is into his second round of the meds on vets advice due to the prolonged heat spell and they have it totally under control now - we will start reducing in a week - the meds in a morning and the suppliment overnight and see how he copes with a view to him going onto the suppliment for the rest of the summer.

We have had his hock injury to contend with but blue icing it, bute and now using the arnica gel its about right - he had the farrier on Wednesday last week and over the weekend he went off on his front o/s - rang farrier suggested we get the nappy on and see how he goes, he came out last night and checked and other than a very small bruise can't find anything else, the other 3 feet are fine, no conclusion is that its a combination of extra weight bearing, heat, baked ground conditions and the trim -he can be a bit of wimp at best of times, after last years experience of multiple abcessing following an injury we were a little worried he was heading the same way but farrier thinks not - we have a partial dry poultice on it to provide padding, left the nappy off today as the heavy dew overnight meant by morning it was causing more problems due to the weight of it ! He seemed to be walking much better this morning - hopefully back to normal soon - this has all delayed his rebacking - best laid plans and all that! Hes out 24/7 as per farrier as when we took him in at the weekend he stressed and managed to rub his backside raw, so we have been cleaning and creaming that all week, all but a small area sorted thanks to the Alva miracle.

His brief return to showing after 18 months ammounts to 1 show this year so far - aiming maybe for some late season or Winter showing with him now.

Glad to hear he's slowly getting back to his old self!

I know how you feel with ten tonnes of things getting in the way of the best laid plans!

Maybe a few winter woolies shows to start him off and lead into the 2014 season?

Glad Charlie is feeling more like himself, and then to follow up with bit of lameness for you to worry about, that was helpful!

Fingers crossed all goes well and the return to showing will only be slightly delayed.

We had some strange grasses with flowers come up one year, similar to rape seed but the flowers had more of a blue bell appearance, albeit it with tiny flower heads. The water board had 'kindly' reseeded the farmers fields as they'd dug up sections to lay new water pipes (and cutting through the fields drainage in the process )
Within a few months of them doing this, Shadow became poorly with his breathing, and was coughing up phlegm (this was two weeks after an episode involving a careless 'x' sharer, who'd ragged him around a field, letting halve the estate ride him so could be just a coincidence).. these grasses which came up quickly was in bloom. It took 18 months to put him right, 3 months of getting the symptoms under control, first with ventipulmin, then with Global herbs, immune plus and breath easy (there was another one I used but can't remember what it was), and he returned to full health. Also the strange grass didn't come up the following year.
He only occasionally gets a cough now, and that's if he hasn't been worked or a week (and even then that rarely happens now). It's been 6 years since this all happened and we have never looked back.

His weezing has stopped, his back leg injury was almost right then went off on front - thought (more hoped) its was just bruising but despite poulicing he got worse - yes we have an abcess - burst side of frog at heal and he is now walking fine ont it - unfortuenely he managed to aggrivate the rear leg injury so he is now in on bute on rest for a couple of days to give the hind leg a breather
blue iced it - he came in yesterday and had a small leg stretch in walk this morning on the flat just to keep things mobile without straining - plenty of gunk still drawing from front - hes had to have his on to stop him rubbing his backside raw - hairs just growing back from last time- we have moved him into bigger stable where he has more of a view, wetting his hay - in himself he seems quite happy other than he made it clear he didn't want to turn back when he thought he was going out - okay once he got over his paddy.
