So we have all heard of Moody Mares, but my pony share is most certainly
a Grumpy Gelding!
The moment he see's someone, anyone, not just me, or his owner, his ears
go right back and he just looks like the moodiest pony ever!
He's very head shy and swings his bum round to you when he has really had enough!
He hasn't kicked out but when your tacking up he likes to scrap his front hoof on the floor in annoyance and looks at me in utter astonishment that he is going to be ridden.

Health wise he is very well, he's only recently had a new saddle fitted for
him by his owner and is well kept. He goes out in the field during the day and comes in at night.

So does anyone else have a Grumpy Gelding?

he sounds like my sisters horse alot. he doesnt get enough attention i feel is the main problem. he puts his ears back when you walk past his door and has bitten before.
i think its more likely your pony has a physical or mental problem and just seems grumpy, rather than him being a grumpy gelding.

 a physical or mental problem?

I think if he was my boy I would certainly put alot of effort into finding out
the cause of his behaviour. However, as a sharer I am a bit nervous of saying to the owner "whats with your pony?" because they seem to just accept it as just him being him.

I supposed I want to see who else has experienced or has experienced a horse that acts like this!?

basically, he just seems like something is hurting him or hes unhappy in his routine or he has had bad treatment in the past. he will be showing this behaviour for a reason, it isnt "just him"

The gelding stabled next door to my horse does this.

If anyone walks past his stable it's ears right back.

In fact the other day I was sweeping the yard outside of my stable, I got a bit too close to his stable door and he launched himself over the door and bit me

I'm not sure what he's like with his owner as he's on full loan but I know he does it with the girl who loans him.

Again, i'd be trying desperately to find out what was wrong if he was mine

I also have a grumpy gelding.

One day he just want's cuddles and attention and the next it ears back and bum in your face and don't even dare try to groom him.

I got a reading done for him and was told that he is very prone to mood swings which his previous owner confirmed.

There is nothing physically wrong with him - he's just a bit grumpy sometimes but then again aren't we all!:D

I do wish I could do something for him. He has been at his stables for a good few years, he's on full working livery, he has a good routine. Most people I meet at the stables are very causcious around him. Its frustrating!!!!

you mean working livery like lots of other people ride him, tack him up etc. if it is this could be the problem, novice riders can hurt horses with out meaning to. or people could tack him up in a hurry and pinch his skin with the girth, bang his teeth with the bit, girth him too tight or ride badly, harshly..... lots of horses who are ridden by lots of differnt people are like this, and especially if hes been on the yard for ages.

I have a grumpy gelding, I think he has been mis-understood in the past though & thats why he behaves like he does.

Bless him, the littlelest thing offends him & I get a foul faced look! He is also very intelligent & I under-estimate him a hell of a lot!!

Mine has been lately..

Ever since the temperature drop he's been fizzy and crabby when I won't let him go. Because he doesnt' want a nice canter he wants all out run with no balance or steering. He also gets REAL bad around mares! I rode him in an arena with 5 other mares and finally had to put him in a ten-15-ten meter circle at trot. That was the ONLY thing that would work as I became concerned for safety.

Everytime we pass another horse he pulls evils faces and has even stamped his foot if we're standing still.

I've decided to have the vet check his back as we have a recently fitted saddle I'm not so sure of.

My Shetland gelding is the most miserable git you ever met!

The only time he's happy is when he's up to mischief.

You'd think he'd be happy, he's got 4 girls to play with.

Typical Man, :D

My boy is a grumpy gelding too.

He's not a face-puller, just big on drama. Most of his grumpiness stems from separation anxiety:-

If he's last to be turned out in the morning he has a real cob-on and scrapes his hoof impatiently while I have the audacity to change into my wellies.

If he's first to be brought in at tea-time - he stomps about in sheer disbelief, whinnying endlessly.

If he's brought in to be tacked up and ridden he is bargy and bad-mannered.

If you hack him out on your own you have to be ready for extra spookiness, nappiness, spinning and stupidness.

If you hack out in company - you have to make sure you all stick together (I found this out when hacking out as a group of six horses, three of them went ahead and I stayed back with the other two - when the first three disappeared round a corner grumpy gelding had a spak-attack.

.....
But then he has his mellow, chilled moments (occasionally) and they make up for all the rest!! :) :D

My boy is like this
Pulls Moody faces but he is starting to come out of this
I think its because he has never been loved properly as he was an race horse and went to a few yards etc
But he is getting a LOADS of LOVE from me and he is now trusting me and i'm now trusting him :D:D:D
I love him to bits
Also i can be very grumpy 2  So my parents say we are a perfect match :D

Mines on and off grumpy! Usually, now, related to wanting to be higher than me in the peacking order.
Previously tho' it was due to his intolerance to oatfeed - had general tummy ache all the time.

Hmm maybe it is a bit of a lack of love. With me riding him, the owners daughter and then various other people when he is used for lessons. Then ontop of that he is on full livery so he gets mucked out by other people and fed by other people. Maybe he just doesn't know who he belongs to!?

Obviously this is just a guess :(

Drummer is a grump of the highest order, i get the face pulling and when i muck out he's stood behind me snapping at the air with his teeth :D.
I'm 13 years he has never bitten me, he's just a grumpy old man lol.
I think it stems from a constant skin infection that he's had since before i bought him.
I don't think he's ever been comfortable, with the itching or constant washing and treatments he's had poor thing.
I think i would be shirty with people if they kept coming and messing about with already sore legs :(.
I let him off with the grumps, he deserves to grumble lol.

Spyder is a grumpy old man. He doesn't like being stabled, and will let everyone know by swinging at them, ears pinned back when you walk past. I tend to either ignore him, or just stand and stare at him, when his ears will suddenly prick up and he'll beg for treats . He makes me laugh when h'es grumpy because he pulls the most funny faces. All you have to do is put your hand in your pocket and he'll be back to having his ears pricked forwards, head on one side hoping there's a polo for him.
