Sparta had an abscess last year that we chased and searched for for weeks, it went away, it came back We found it, no we didn't, we poulticed and booted and were beginning to become worried. Then BAM one day it burst out through the coronet leaving a massive split, This split has spent the whole year getting closer and closer to the ground.

Yesterday was the day I had to bite the bullet and put new shoes on and deal with a massive split.

In the end we just had to chop right back, under the split was stinky black cheese, which I suspected. I chopped it back to clean healthy horn and managed to get a shoe back on. Went for a hack afterwards, and she seemed very pleased with her new feets.

Wow that's quite a big cut back, are you expected a fairly quick grow out??

Luckily Sparta's feet grow really fast, so at the next shoeing I hope it to be half the size.

I've dealt with similar in the past, though obviously I wasn't the poor soul trimming it out then putting the shoe on. It's amazing how quickly it grows out once it reaches this stage & also how little it bothers them. Looks like a nice neat job Wally :)

That one is really quite unremarkable. The worst I have had to do was WLD that had worked its way so far up the foot it had to be cut out to within about 5/8 of an inch from the coronet. Just put a shoe on with quarter clips to support it and a wider web on the shoe. and it grew out in a year without any bother at all......but it's scary.
