Best excecise for riding fitness ?

I have started doing weights at the gym and this has really started to tone up and strengthen my muscles. I find it gives me a huge boost when I can increase the amount I lift and I feel much stronger through my core.

Funny you should say skipping, that appeals. Loved it as a kid and now I can stick it under fitness.
How much would you need to do, build up obviously.
‘I think it’s something like 10 calories per minute.
I used to do boxercise/ circuit training at the gym....the skipping part killed me!
Great for toning your bum and arms too.

Elliptical/rowing machine for cardio, plus however much time I spend on my bike.

About to start pilates classes (I have a pilates for riders DVD).

As you all know I am on a massive get fit and weight loss push to help with my riding and general health and fitness...

I swim every day nearly for an hour and use the gym for 30 mins to which of the following would be best for rider fitness

Bike
Rower
Tread mill

Answers on a postcard please lol

I would imagine swimming is pretty good all round, especially if you push yourself slightly. :)

Sorry been away.

Anything that gets your heart rate up will improve your fitness. But it is all about what you want to achieve, Ie for weight loss you need to get your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes 4 times a week. This mixed up with some strength training.

Although steady state is great to loss weight it is only good if you have the time as @Pete's Mum stated a lot of people don't have the time for an couple of miles walking etc where as a good 30 minute cardio (the rower is also for all over body workout) plus 15 minutes on the weight bay can see your whole body change shape tone loss weight and feel good.

I love the gym you can mix it up with different machines or as the gym staff to write you a training program. My favorites are a combo or the running machine sprints jumping off doing squats getting back on sprinting jumping off press ups etc only working for 30 mins but its hard and a huge car burn.

You can add skipping in to the above which is excellent and good fun. Weights are a real cal burning as well and quite addictive when you see the muscle building and please do not think you will end up looking like a body building it is actually really hard for ladies to build that type of muscle unless they are training for it and the means a couple of times a day pushing massive weights. I training will heavy weights and I am still a size 6-8 it about how you training with them.

As for just riding. This is not enough for me and isn't for most people as you need to be riding actively galloping up out the saddle cantering or trotting for long periods I struggle to burn a lot of cals. Wearing a heart rate monitor it the only true way of seeing how hard you are actually working and if you are getting your heart rate up and keeping it there.

Good luck and enjoy

I need to work on my core strength so I don't get flung off.
I do the horse stance pointer.

I lost 4.5 stone to get back on a horse- went from a size 20 to a size 8-10.

I did most of the weight loss through eating better rather than exercising heavily.

It’ll improve your core strength but if it’s weight loss you’re after, you get better results if you look at your food intake too.

I’ll declare my interest here- I’m a Slimming World Consultant. :)

If you have flipagram (or whatever it calls itself this week), there’s a video of my before & after here: http://www.vigovideo.net/share/vide...d=6547982506849847042&did=6546859451054573058

I've done SW successfully in the past (old skool red and green days) but I find it doesn't really teach you portion control. I've always been a big eater so would measure out my HEXA and B and my allowed proteins or carbs but then pig out on my free foods for that day. So I still lost weight eating huge meals. I've educated myself a bit more these days and don't eat as much!! :p
