At the moment Whiskey is currently resembling a gremlin that's piddled on an electric fence. All she's used for is light hacking and letting the kids have a wee lead around on.
Her manes all over the place and she just looks so scruffy at the moment. Dosn't help she's wintering out without a rug on this year aswell.... Anyways what would you do to her mane as a way of tidying her up and how would you do it?

I would leave it be!! Step away from the scissors/clippers and let her be hairy

There's got to be a way to train it to sit to one side at least? I've tried plaiting it before but that never worked, it just bounced back to being everywhere again.
When it's pulled it just goes like a Mohawk until it's thick enough to weigh itself down and she dosn't suit a hogged mane either.

I agree, keep it how it is, it's a beautiful mane.
It looks like a double mane and unfortunately they are nigh-on impossible to tame to one side! I have done my best with a few and never achieved it even trying long-term!

Mine has one and I have managed to talk to it nicely for the most part to stay on the right. :)

Teach me your ways of mane whispering haha
I'd leave be too, when it gets a bit longer it should weigh itself down a bit more :)
Her mane never seems to get much longer than what it's at now. It always gets to a certain length then just stops growing.

Everytime I scroll through Instagram everyone else's horses look pristine and perfectly pulled and the riders are always immaculate aswell even in the winter then I look at my lot and we're all so scruffy. Myself included haha mega turnout envy haha

That mane is gorgeous, I would leave it be too. Who cares if other peoples horses have neat and tidy manes? Hers is extra special and it looks in beautiful shiny condition, who cares if it is a bit 'all over the place'? I would love if my mares mane look like that. Embrace it and stuff everyone else, theirs just have bog standard manes after all :)

You want to see scruffy? I'll try and get some photo's of my girl and show you scruffy!
If it bothers you the easy answer is just stop looking on Instagram :p :D

I like a longer mane in winter to keep them warm if they have a no neck rug. It's tricky if it won't grow longer. My two look terrible but I really don't worry as Im only happy hacking.

Hahaha I've been embracing the scruffy look since I was a little girl. Just sometimes fancy not being the cabbage patch kids every now and then ha :p:p:p

Here you are @Hoof_hearted. This is our double mane. I leave the section by her ears to do as it's wants, be both sides. That actually is your friend re flicking flies.
The rest is longer and one side but could be changed.

See even though it's a double mane it still looks neat and tidy Whisks' is just bonkers, like it has it's own ideas on how hair should grow defying the laws of gravity.

We're only happy hackers aswell. And I know she's healthy and happy which is far more important that appearance. However come summer next year if her mane dosn't do something to be less erratic I will attempt drastic measures. (Not sure what those measures are, still looking for ideas here you bunch of naturalists hahaha)

This whole conversation has reminded me of a meme I seen this one time. Gonna go see if i can hunt it out!

Unless you are showing then really does it matter - if showing then on the right, although Acorns naturally falls to the left and trying to lay it to the right thins it and distracts so we show him with it to the left and its not affected his results. Charlies falls naturally to the right so easy - Gems has a tendancy to fall both sides but lays quite easy if you want it to the right - Tess has a double mane and so does Nuts - those who show seriously spend hours training unruly manes but for me its not a deal breaker, I wouldn't touch it.

I would leave it be. My horse has a very thick and long mane, it used to hang both sides but after 6 years of daily brushing it more of less keeps to the right now, unless he tosses his head that is! There are more important things to worry about than having a neat mane.

Of course it dosn't really matter As long as she's healthy and happy was just wondering what other people would do as a way of tidying up her mane. To make her the belle of the non existent ball in amongst all the mud :D:D

If you want a posh day could you put some nice plaits in, when its longer you could do a lattice or running plait :)
you know not once plaiting her up crossed My mind I was far more fixated on a longer term option. I could certainly use the practice and I'm sure whisks would love the pampering that comes with it.

I have tried to let it grow out on several occasions but it always gets to a certain length and just seems to stop.
