Hoofcare

What do you do regarding care of the hoof, what if any supplements do you use, and also what do you use externally on the hoof, sole itself
In wet conditions I use the Day carr & Martin hoof barrier which protects the hoof from the wet/dry cycle that cause cracks splits etc, this is also applied to the sole as well as the hoof wall, in dry conditions I use the hoof dressing from the same company, to nourish and hydrate
I also use hoof oil a couple of times per week, she gets no supplementation at all, but is fed the Top spec comprehensive which does contain a very generous hoof supplement amongst other things

Writing in red is from Top specs site regarding the addition of biotin in their feeds

The level of Biotin (15mg/500kg horse/day) that is scientifically proven to improve hoof quality, plus the levels of methionine, cysteine, lysine, calcium, zinc, copper, iodine, vitamin A and soya oil known to improve the efficiency of biotin alone. Was interesting to read in the hoof care section that the poster Keratex also mentions these other things as being very important to hoof health
She also very very occasionaly gets a sprinkle of seaweed but thats all it is a sprinkle
She has brilliant feet, no cracks, no splits and can keep shoes on with no problems

What is everyones elses routine

I don't have one!

I just pick feet out occasionally. I feed Bailey's Lo Cal which is an all round vit & min balancer.

One is barefoot and one is shod.

Both of mine have good feet which don't need anything doing to them so I'm very lucky.

Tylers hooves just dont grow. My poor farrier lol.

Tyler gets Baileys Lo-Cal. I apply the Daily Hoof Dressing occasioanlly and pick out feet. He can be prone to thrush, so try to wash them once a week then spray with Bactakil.

Greymare have you tried the hoof ointment from the same range"Carr Day and Martin" you apply it round the coronet band its supposed to be very good to accerlerate new growth, every day then perhaps after that you could use it 1x weekly and then the daily hoof drsssing to maintain the ointment also great for getting hair to regrow back on scars etc, Abbie could do with it by the gallon lol her legs are full of scars which she had when I bought her

I don't normally use any dressings, but I occasionally use a hoof disinfectant spray. My Tb gets Equimins Hoof Mender supplement and both horses are fed a low sugar low starch diet. I also only shoe them for 7 months of the year and keep them barefoot for the rest of the time, which gives the feet time to recover and allows all the nail holes to grow out.

No I havent but if it helps I am willing to give it a try!! His hoofs just dont do very much lol. They are strong enough, just dont grow lol.

I have thought about taking Tylers back shoes off. He has to have front shoes on as it is remedial shoeing due to sidebone and having bad feet.
