Book Reviews 2

Allen Photographic Guides

These are low priced, short books (24 pages), which introduce the reader to all aspects of riding and horse care. They are full of useful information written in a clear and concise way. Each book covers a different subject and to-date there are more than 40 in the series.

Publisher: J A Allen & Co Ltd.

The Native British Spotted Pony by Mary Bassett
(Guide Number 5)

I found this book fascinating because I had no idea this breed existed or that it had been around since the Ice age. The book covers the history of the breed, the official breed profile including all the different colours, markings, and characteristic of the breed.

Boots, Bandages and Studs by Vanessa Britton
(Guide Number 38)

There is a huge choice of boots, bandages, and studs currently available; this book is divided into sections of type, fitting, and uses with the emphasis on the importance of the comfort of the horse and the safety of both the horse and rider.
There is also a section on bandaging awkward places, which has excellent diagrams and photographs.

All about Endurance Riding by Marcy Pavord
(Guide Number 42)

Again, this is a subject I know very little about but the book is explains the subject well, covering how to start, tack and equipment, training and the competition. The author has provided a straightforward guide to the sport, giving a clear insight into endurance and what is involved.

Your Horse’s Feet by Alison Schwabe
(Guide Number 43)

There is an old saying “no foot, no horse”; I do not think any horse owner cannot fail to appreciate this book. It is full of useful information with sections on the horse’s foot, shoeing for special purposes, about the farrier and his training as well as the responsibilities of the horse owner. This booklet provides an essential and invaluable guide, with some explicit photographs.
