Pace
  A two beat lateral gait found naturally in Icelandic horses.

It is used for ridden races.

Pacer
  A pacer is a horse than paces. Standardbreds, Icelandics and Camels are all natural pacers.

Pace used to be the gait used on most horses for riding until the popularity of the Welsh Cob as a driving horse became high. Welshes could not pace but trot and as the popularity of driving increased, the use of pace decreased until there are now few natural pacers.

Paddock
  A fenced-in area of grassland in which horses are turned out. Generally used to denote a small area.

Paint
  A horse developed in the last few years from the American Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred. Popular for its patchy colouring, which is similar to Pinto.

Palimino
  Is classed as a colour, although it may be classed as a type. The breeding society regulations specifie that the body should be "the colour of newly minted gold coins" and the tail and mane should be "creamy white in colour" face markings permited.
In showing at high level may not be classed as coloured horse also so see words like coloured or piebald or skewbald.

Palomino
  This colouring is like a very pale chestnut, but not as pale as a cream, with a flaxen mane and tail. The Palomino Society lays down very specific regulations as to permitted colouring.

Panel (Saddle)
  Full - reaches almost to the bottom of the saddle-flap and is lined all the way down. There is sometimes a short sweat-flap called the under-flap between the panel and the girth straps. Knee and thigh rolls are also attached to this panel.

Half - only reaches halfway down the saddle-flap and sometimes has a large sweat-flap. Both types should be fitted with buckle guards to prevent the panel form being damaged by the girth buckles.

Parasite
  Is an animal living on or in another and at the host's expense. Those, which affect the horse, are:
External - tick, harvest mite, mites causing mange, louse.
Internal - tapeworm, fluke, redworm, lungworm, whiteworm, seatworm, warble fly maggot, botfly, maggot.

Parrot Jaw
  When the lower jaw is shorter than the top jaw. An inherited condition results in overgrowth of the front teeth and end molars, due to lack of wear from the teeth in the opposite jaw. Older horses may suffer malnutrition.

Passage
  A high school movement consisting of a very rhythmic, collected, elevated, cadenced trot in which there is pronounced engagement of the quarters an accentuated flexion of the knees and hocks. It is a graceful and elastic movement.

  Is a document necessary for the identification of horses, especially Thoroughbreds, in training to allow them to travel abroad. It contains a marking certificate, vaccination papers.

Patella (stifle joint)
  The same as our knee. It is a hinge joint that acts in one direction without sideways movement. It is pulley (fulcrum) bone, over which the tendons and ligaments gain leverage.
